While we may be getting tired of the term, we can reframe it as an equitable, just, and democratic international order where every nation adheres to the principle of the UN Charter – the sovereign equality of states.
Aside from the fear of losing hegemony, they openly, perhaps inadvertently, reveal that the US is in control, with everyone else falling in line under its authority.
NATO’s Deputy Secretary General (from Romania), Mircea Geoana, recently remarked that the world is entering an era of intense competition between the West on one side and Russia and China on the other.
He asserts that Moscow, Beijing, and others are increasingly attempting to undermine American power to varying degrees. It is notable that the North Atlantic Alliance emphasises American power rather than Western or NATO power.
Therefore, according to the Romanian NATO deputy secretary general, Washington relies on its European allies, which underscores the essence of NATO’s existence, as articulated by one of its key spokespersons and representatives.
Such statements abound in the current discourse.
Here is another candid admission among many.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, who occasionally offers insights such as the one about the ‘blooming garden’ surrounded by a ‘jungle,’ recently remarked (perhaps in a moment of frustration or agitation) that the West is not fighting for Ukraine but against Russia.

Today, we received the awaited decision on the US aid package that we long fought for. And a very significant one. Our warriors on the front lines, as well as our cities and villages suffering from Russian terror, will feel it.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted on it today. I thank everyone who supported our package, this is a solution for protecting life. I personally thank Speaker Mike Johnson and all American hearts who believe, as we do in Ukraine, that Russian evil must not be winning. I am hopeful that the bill will be quite quickly passed by the United States Senate and sent to President Biden.
We appreciate every sign of support for our country and its independence, people, and way of life, which Russia is attempting to bury under the rubble. America has demonstrated its leadership since the first days of this war. Exactly this type of leadership is required to maintain a rules-based international order and predictability for all nations.
We will undoubtedly use American assistance to strengthen both of our nations and bring a just end to this war closer, the war that Putin must lose.
I thank our entire Ukrainian team and everyone who works tirelessly to bring this outcome closer. I am grateful to all of our country’s representatives, diplomats working to strengthen support for Ukraine, all civil society members, every volunteer who works for Ukraine, and all of Ukraine’s friends around the world. Developing | Two mass graves were discovered by Palestinians near Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis following the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces.
“We found corpses without heads, bodies without skins, and some had their organs stolen,” reported the Director-General of the Government Media Office in a statement.
Since the Israeli occupation withdrew, more than 180 bodies have been found in mass graves in the Nasser Hospital area. The bodies include elderly women, children, and young men.
Rescuers recounted witnessing bodies found in plastic bags with Hebrew writings on them. Many of the bodies had their hands tied behind their backs, indicating they were executed before being buried in these mass graves.

Just one week after the outbreak of the First Intifada in 1987, Riad brought his sisters Hanan, Alia and Narima
n together in their living room and began recording The Intifada album on equipment he had made himself. One of these was co-written with their friend, the acclaimed Palestinian writer Mahmoud Darwish.
Riad printed 3000 copies of the cassettes which he began distributing in the Old City of Jerusalem and across the West Bank. The Israeli Army immediately confiscated all the copies they could find, the vast majority of which remain in the military archives to this day. Riad was arrested, interrogated and detained for several months.
Straight after his release, he formed a band, Palestinian Union, and put out a new album. He then founded a school, offering kids in the West Bank an alternative musical education, teaching them how to create their own electronic equipment.
In 2005, Riad was tragically killed in a car accident. His legacy lives on through his family, his timeless music and his powerful story, which continues to inspire 34 years on from the First Intifada.

During the first lockdown of 2020, artist and music collector Mo’min Swaitat was in Jenin, in the north of the West Bank, when he met up with a family friend and former record label owner, whom he remembered from childhood. The family friend told him he no longer ran the label and that all his cassettes were now in storage and had not been played for decades. Mo’min purchased over five thousand cassettes from him, amongst them a large collection of music from the First Intifada. One of these was The Intifada album.
