Wow, this is huge. We now have confirmation – directly from a Reuters investigation (!) – that a special team was created in the CIA under Trump to create negative news about China and spread them in international media, and in Chinese social media. Immensely hypocrite given how the US constantly has paranoid panic attacks about how “foreign adversaries” might try to influence their population… Again these days with TikTok… Turns out that, as is often the case, it was projection.

Looking at the details, Reuters reports that “Trump authorized the CIA to launch a clandestine campaign on Chinese social media aimed at turning public opinion in China against its government, according to former U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the highly classified operation.”

The CIA then “created a small team of operatives who used bogus internet identities to spread negative narratives about Xi Jinping’s government while leaking disparaging intelligence to overseas news outlets.”

The operation wasn’t confined to China: “the 2019 authorization uncovered by Reuters […] enabled the CIA to take action not only in China but also in countries around the world where the United States and China are competing for influence. Four former officials said the operation targeted public opinion in Southeast Asia, Africa and the South Pacific.”

Which is why you should take any negative “news” about China with a massive pinch of salt: for all you know, it might originate from a CIA operative in Langley, Virginia…

And the program might still be going on as “Reuters was unable to determine whether the administration of President Joe Biden has maintained the CIA program.”

A UN investigation on the Oct 13 killing of a Reuters reporter by Israel (and wounding of 6 other journalists) in Lebanon concludes the following: “The firing at civilians, in this instance clearly identifiable journalists, constitutes a violation of UNSCR 1701 (2006) and international law”.

UNSCR 1701 is a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

The report states they were “clearly identifiable journalists” when a Israeli tank fired 2 shells at them and that Israel did so without provocation, as “there was no exchange of fire across the Blue Line at the time of the incident”.
