In exchange for the reunification of Germany western leaders made a deal with Russia not to expand NATO eastwards. It’s a well documented fact. Instead NATO expanded to the Russian border with their weapon systems despite numerous warnings from Russia.

In a CNN Interview he said the US Govt told him “You’re not going to be a NATO member” but the US asked to keep the public facade that Ukraine may join.
It means the US could have easily prevented this war but didn’t. Ukrainians pay the price
