The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.”

I was asked to speak at an event on “what it’s like to be a woman in science”. In the spirit of transparency, I tell them I’m pregnant but will still be working at that point. They emailed back today saying they will “go with another speaker☹️ #womeninSTEM

Out of interest why did you tell them? Perhaps they thought you mentioning it meant you wanted it taking into account? Because I’m struggling to understand why you thought it was relevant?☘️Muireann Irish?‏ @Muireann_Irish

In hindsight, I honestly don’t know. I felt I should let them know out of courtesy but that sounds ridiculous now. I definitely didn’t want it taken into account because there isn’t really anything to accommodate. It’s just business as usual.

Roelien den Ouden‏ @RoeliendenOuden

I can imagine you thought you could share that with them, as part of the experience of being a woman in science, without having to fear repercussions. I think the article you might write about this incident will do more for women in science than the talk you were going to give.

☘️Muireann Irish?‏ @Muireann_Irish

Thank you for the idea! A pithy piece on this sounds just the ticket!!

Simon J. Hernandez‏ @shimown

Exactly! And it’s already written for you. “I was recently invited to speak on the topic of what it’s like to be a woman in science…” Then describe your experience. Ta da! Done.

It might be the easiest paper I’ve ever written!!!

Elaine Heyworth‏ @Elaineheyworth

Honi erantzuten: @Muireann_Irish

But why did you tell them?

☘️Muireann Irish?‏ @Muireann_Irish

I don’t know why, I thought it was the “right thing to do”. But now I’m questioning why I felt the need!

Spacegirl Books‏ @spacegirlbooks

Yes, none of their business and turning up with a nice bump would have sent a great message.

☘️Muireann Irish?‏ @Muireann_Irish

I know! It’s a real disappointment but I’ve decided I’m going to channel my energy and do some school visits instead 🙂

Elaine Heyworth‏ @Elaineheyworth

Great. Kids are a lot more fun anyway. Catch them early!!!

☘️Muireann Irish?‏ @Muireann_Irish

Totally! I’ll direct my efforts to a more deserving audience!

Nelle R Pierson‏ @NellePierson

Your first response is to blame her? Smh

Elaine Heyworth‏ @Elaineheyworth

Blame? Only if you read it that way. It was just a question!!

Micah Allen‏ @micahgallen

Honi erantzuten: @Muireann_Irish

Not acceptable! Have you written back to let them know this is unfair behavior?

☘️Muireann Irish?‏ @Muireann_Irish

I expressed my disappointment but I could see I wasn’t going to get anywhere. They didn’t even apologise now that I think about it. This happens all the time though – people try to “ease the load” by holding back opportunities, not realising how damaging that is.

Micah Allen‏ @micahgallen

I’m very sorry. It never ceases to amaze me how unfairly we treat women in science.

☘️Muireann Irish?‏ @Muireann_Irish

Thanks, I’ve had a very good run to be fair and incredible support but every now and then things like this happen that really get my goat!
