(i) DAPL: “The Fight Will Continue, and It Can Still Be Won”1

The movement is led and directed by Indigenous people, and it is historic. Hundreds of tribes have come together in solidarity to protect the water, including tribes that profit from resource extraction. Women are leading as much as men are, and the movement prioritizes and respects the voices of indigenous youth. Prayer and ceremony are as integral to the work as the marches, rallies, and actions at construction sites; indeed, every action is in itself a ceremony. (…)

We had gathered to support Amy Goodman, host and executive producer of Democracy Now!, who had filmed police violence towards the protectors and was subsequently charged with rioting. I finally saw for myself what many native and Black people have long understood to be true—that the institutions that are ostensibly charged with protecting us are used as violent, heavily militarized enforcers of corporate will. (…)

This is a moment in history that will help define the norms of our democracy moving forward. Will corporate interests and manipulations win out over the common good? Will US tax dollars be used to arm a militarized force and mobilize it against citizens in protection of seemingly nameless, faceless big business? Will the fate of our natural resources be abandoned to the likelihood of disastrous pipeline failures?(…)”

The fight is cold & difficult & dangerous – but that will not dissuade us. We thrive to build the world better. #NoDAPL #KeepItInTheGround

(ii) Dakota Access Pipeline: Misleading the Court, the Public…or Both?3

The company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) owes its investors a straight answer: does it face a January 1 contractual deadline with its shippers, or doesn’t it? Company spokespeople have told the court that they do, but told the press that they don’t. Now, with less than two weeks before the alleged deadline, it’s time for the company to stop the doubletalk and set the record straight. (…)”

(iii) Standing Rock Reveals the True Colors of Both the Media and the Democratic Party5

The historic gathering of over two hundred Native American tribes and thousands of their allies at Standing Rock in North Dakota has put on stark display the state of this country’s corporate media and its nominally left-leaning party. (…)”

Will Obama Grant Leonard Peltier His Last Chance at Freedom?8

… Healy and his Human Rights Action Center have been working tirelessly towards obtaining clemency for Peltier for decades. Recent efforts have included producing numerous “I Will” video pieces, featuring several high-profile individuals asking for clemency on behalf of Peltier

…The list of people and organizations who support Peltier and his clemency request is massive and impressive. It includes the Dalai Lama, the late Nelson Mandela, the late Mother Theresa, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Noam Chomsky, Ward Churchill, Angela Davis, former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark, the National Lawyers Guild and the Parliaments of the EU, Belgium and Italy. Stars like Jane Fonda, Danny Glover, the Indigo Girls, the late Peter Matthiessen and Robert Redford are on board, as are civil rights leaders like the Rev. Jesse Jackson and organizations like Amnesty International, Center for Constitutional Rights and the World Council of Churches. (…)

…”Leonard is very supportive of what happened at Standing Rock,” Magee9 said. “For him, it’s the new generation doing what he tried to do. In the 1970s after Bobby and Jack Kennedy were killed, and MLK, the American Indian Movement stood up and said enough was enough. So he’s proud of the people at Standing Rock.

Healey feels it is now imperative that, after withstanding decades of maximum-security prisons and long periods of solitary confinement, Peltier be freed. (…)

… It is highly likely Peltier will die in jail if he is not granted clemency, given an incoming Trump administration. Obama has a crucial chance to support his survival. Over the next month, we will see whether or not he takes it.”

Lakota people are in struggle, again…
