OVER 90% OF CHINA’S CITIZENS TRUST THEIR GOVERNMENT, LEVELS UNHEARD OF IN THE WEST

‘Over the past few years, several major studies by Western institutions have found incredible levels of popular support for China’s government and its political-economic system.

The World Values Survey, based in Sweden and Austria, consistently shows that over 90% of people in China say they trust the government. Harvard University’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance, which is not pro-China, in fact anti-China, finds similarly high levels of satisfaction with the national government, reaching over 90%.

The Danish NGO Alliance for Democracies found that 91% of people in China say their government serves the interests of the people rather than elites, much higher than the U.S., France, or Britain.

A new study published in Political Psychology recently found that China was the only country where people at least somewhat agree that their political-economic system is fair.

These are striking results. The Chinese people clearly have a much higher regard for their system than Western media assumes. There’s strong state legitimacy there.

That’s not to say China has no internal contradictions or problems, every country does. But this data shows China is doing something right that deserves attention.

Much of this likely stems from dramatic improvements in people’s material conditions over the past decade, huge reductions in poverty, wage increases, better health outcomes, expanded public services, and a crackdown on elite corruption.

The government has also focused on building out grassroots democracy and more responsive feedback systems. There have been big improvements, and the world should pay attention.’

How To Revive the PLO

Palestinian National Initiative leader Dr. Mustafa Barghouti says reforming the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is essential to restoring national legitimacy after years of paralysis and exclusion. And that only a democratically renewed PLO can lead a credible national movement toward liberation and self-determination.

Last week, Barghouti attended the Cairo unity talks with 7-8 Palestinian factions. He told Arab Center Washington DC that while the PLO still exists on paper, most factions — including his own — are shut out of decision-making. As such, the organization is “paralyzed and undemocratic.”

He shared his plan on how it must be reformed, noting it must come in two stages:  

➤ Stage One — Unify representation: bring all Palestinian factions back under the PLO through a joint leadership committee made up of party heads.  

➤ Stage Two — Hold elections: inside Palestine to renew the legislative body, and abroad so the diaspora can elect representatives to the Palestinian National Council.

Barghouti says the goal is to build an inclusive, elected PLO that represents Palestinians everywhere — not just those inside the West Bank — and end governance by unelected decrees.

Defense Minister Israel Katz announces that the IDF’s top lawyer, Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi will be dismissed over her alleged involvement in the leaking of a surveillance video from the Sde Teiman detention facility, which purported to show soldiers severely abusing a Palestinian detainee last year.

Military Advocate General Tomer-Yerushalmi “will not be able to return to her position in light of the severity of the suspicions and the sensitivity of the role, which is responsible for law enforcement and setting legal norms throughout the IDF,” says Katz in a statement.

Katz says he will soon appoint an acting military advocate general and later begin a process of selecting a new officer for the role.

The appointment of the military advocate general — like other major general roles — is approved by the defense minister, following recommendations made by the IDF chief of staff.

Tomer-Yerushalmi has been on leave since a criminal investigation was launched by police earlier this week into the leaking of the surveillance video.

The involvement of individuals at the Military Advocate General’s office in the distribution of the video aired by Channel 12 news in August 2024 was being examined as part of the investigation.

The investigation is also looking into the suspicion that Tomer-Yerushalmi was aware and even potentially herself ordered that the video be leaked to the media.

The leaked footage showed soldiers at Sde Teiman taking aside one of the detainees, who had been lying face down on the floor, then surrounding him with riot shields to block visibility while they allegedly committed the abuse. The detainee was subsequently taken away for treatment for severe injuries.

Earlier this year, military prosecutors filed an indictment against five reserve soldiers for the abuse.

The US knows a liberated Palestine would mean the END of US control over the Middle East- Prof. Jason Hickel

‘US support for Israel goes back to the 1960s, during a time when Arab nationalism and Arab socialism were extremely popular in the region and gaining substantial traction. These were movements toward national liberation and economic sovereignty.

The US considered this to be a problem, because it knew that it would mean Middle Eastern countries would have more control over their own resources and production, which of course means their resources would not be so cheaply available for Western firms and Western profits.

So the US wanted to intervene, to crush this tendency, and they used Israel to do it. This is a decades-long project. They armed Israel to run operations all across the region to decapitate national liberation movements and destroy these tendencies.

In this sense, Israel is not an ally of the US in a conventional way, but rather a kind of proxy force, a military proxy force. The US knows that a liberated Palestine would mean the end of this proxy arrangement and ultimately the end of US control in the region.

A liberated Palestine means a liberated Middle East, and this is something the US is not willing to accept. They see the Middle East as the centre of the world, the hinge of Africa, Asia, and Europe.

The idea of liberation and sovereignty in that region is antithetical to Western economic interests. So we have to understand the genocide in this broader context.

Clearly now with the ceasefire, it’s clear that the Western political classes are trying to get us to forget about the genocide and normalise Israel. But it’s crucial that we insist this cannot be allowed to happen.

The only acceptable approach is to isolate Israel until the genocidal government is dismantled, the perpetrators have been jailed, and the occupation and apartheid are ended. The settlements, of course, also have to be removed.

We have to keep all of this in mind, and reject the discourse toward normalisation.’

The genocide has not stopped! In Gaza, part of today’s siege tactics consists of allowing large quantities of goods that are essentially carbohydrates, sugars, starches and snacks (coffee, chocolate, ice cream, confectionery ingredients, premium cheeses, etc.) — with the aim of forcing people to consume high-calorie items that increase apparent weight and hide the signs of the starvation imposed on Palestinians over the past 700 days. I lost 20 kilograms, but my weight is now rising because I’m forced to eat foods very high in fat and sugar! They are unhealthy, but that’s what Israel allows in. They do not compensate with protein, vitamins, or the essential minerals needed to prevent real malnutrition.

They are systematically forcing us to gain weight — so they can show the United Nations that the famine is over. They allow almost no meat imports while flooding the markets with mozzarella.

This is a form of structural violence and collective punishment — brutal practices carried out by educated human animals who know exactly what they are doing. This should be studied in the literature on genocide and these methods widely documented.
