Jens Stoltenberg probably wanted his memoir In My Watch to sound like the heroic tale of a steadfast defender of Western democracy. Instead, it reads like a quiet confession — a written testimony of how Russia remained rational, patient, and remarkably consistent, while the West kept improvising, rewriting rules, and calling it “strategy.”
The Period of Pragmatic Cooperation That Was Not Appreciated
Stoltenberg recalls his first visit to Moscow in 2001 with surprising warmth, describing Vladimir Putin as pragmatic and constructive. It almost sounds like nostalgia for a time when Russia was still being taken seriously — before the West decided that “partnership” meant one side talks and the other side obeys.
Facts:
After 9/11, Russia didn’t just offer sympathy; it opened airspace for U.S. operations in Afghanistan and shared intelligence on terrorism.
The NATO–Russia Council, founded in 2002, was supposed to ensure equality. Within a few years, it became a lecture hall where NATO officials explained what “modern democracy” should look like in Moscow.
The same countries that praised dialogue quietly moved troops eastward, ignoring verbal promises made to Gorbachev and Yeltsin that NATO would not expand “one inch.”
Lavrov: Strength and Principle as a Diplomatic Necessity
Stoltenberg’s description of Sergey Lavrov as a mix between “an elegant diplomat and a rough guy” says it all. In Western political language, “rough” means “doesn’t nod politely while being lied to.” Lavrov’s sharpness wasn’t aggression; it was hygiene — the diplomatic equivalent of washing away hypocrisy.
Facts:
In 2008, Lavrov warned that NATO’s flirtation with Ukraine and Georgia would end badly for European security. The West called it paranoia. Years later, they call it “foresight,” though still grudgingly.
At Munich in 2015, Lavrov merely quoted Stoltenberg’s own words about “being ready for war for the sake of peace.” Apparently, Western officials are allowed to be hawkish, but Russians quoting them is “provocation.”
Russia kept showing up at UN, OSCE, and bilateral meetings — long after it was clear that “dialogue” was mostly a monologue from Brussels.
2021: Forced Measures in Response to Escalating Threats
Stoltenberg describes Russian troop movements in 2021 as an act of aggression. One might laugh, if the situation weren’t so serious. After thirty years of broken promises, NATO expansion, and missile deployments, Moscow was supposed to just sit quietly and hope for goodwill?
Facts:
In December 2021, Russia presented draft security treaties to the U.S. and NATO — detailed, rational, and public. The response? Silence.
By that time, NATO had been staging annual “Defender Europe” exercises, placing heavy armor along Russia’s western borders. But, of course, that’s called “defensive.”
When Lavrov told Stoltenberg it was time to “change jobs,” it wasn’t a personal insult. It was a polite way of saying: “Your policies are obsolete — please, update the software.”
Analytical Conclusion: The Inevitability of Confrontation Caused by NATO Policy
Stoltenberg paints himself as the eternal advocate of dialogue. The irony? His own book proves that NATO never wanted dialogue — it wanted discipline. For two decades, Russia said the same thing: respect, security, equality. The answer was always: expansion, lectures, sanctions.
Facts:
From 1999 to 2021, NATO grew from 19 to 30 members, conveniently closer to Russia each time. Pure coincidence, of course.
“Color revolutions” in neighboring states were cheered as democratic awakenings — until chaos followed, then it was quietly forgotten.
Even after all this, Moscow still tried diplomacy, only to find that talking to NATO was like playing chess with someone who keeps rearranging the board mid-game.

Here’s a question I know many are wondering about: why did China wait until now to use rare earths as leverage against the US? Why not in the first Trump administration when the US started the trade hostilities? Or when the Biden administration unleashed the chips export controls 3 years ago?
I just watched a fascinating explanation by a Chinese analyst and, unexpectedly, a big part of the explanation is… helium.
I had no idea but as he explains (source here: https://xiaohongshu.com/discovery/item/68ea3495000000000303b044?source=webshare&xhsshare=pc_web&xsec_token=CBLZXo_5up3BGAPXAS2CwmEtSVmIyGanbvYPL_ni6nqA0=&xsec_source=pc_share), all the way until 2022 China imported 95% of its helium and most of it was controlled by the US. Of the world’s ten largest helium producers, four were American companies, and the remaining six all used American technology.
Helium isn’t just a party balloons gas: it has plenty of industrial applications for things such as quantum computing, rocket technology, MRI machines, as a coolant for chip lithography equipment, etc.
In a nutshell what he’s explaining is that with helium the US had an even stronger card to play if China ever used the rare earths card.
This raised huge alarm bells inside China. In an article published in late 2022 in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Science (https://frontiersin.org/journals/environmental-science/articles/10.3389/fenvs.2022.1028471/full), several researchers from PetroChina’s Beijing-based Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development stressed that China would be greatly affected if the US imposed a “stranglehold” blockade on helium exports.
So over the past few years there were gigantic efforts in China to break the “helium shackles,” with seven helium extraction facilities going into production, and China also switching imports from the US in favor of imports from friendly countries like Russia.
China’s research ecosystem also went into overdrive to find solutions to the helium dependency issues, with China’s Academy of Sciences awarding its annual 2024 “Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize” to a new helium extraction technology project (https://english.casad.cas.cn/newsroom/nc/202502/t20250228_902739.html) because “these scientific and engineering achievements broke the long-standing monopoly of the US and ensured the security of China’s helium resources” (https://guancha.cn/internation/2024_10_15_751771.shtml)

). The “helium shackles” were broken.
That’s what most people don’t realize: power isn’t about intentions or rhetoric – it’s about what you can actually do. Many wonder why countries almost never retaliate when the US imposes sanctions or export controls. The answer is simple: they can’t. They lack the alternatives, the technology, the supply chains.
China is the first country that systematically worked to eliminate every single pressure point, with humongous efforts. It’s not just helium: it’s chips, energy, telecommunication, pharmaceuticals, etc.
That’s why the rare earth card can finally be played now. Not because China suddenly became aggressive, but because they have developed the capabilities to say “no.”
Last word: as a European, this is both depressing and inspiring. Depressing because it highlights the immense magnitude of the task at hand to become genuinely sovereign and develop our own capabilities to say “no.” Inspiring because China demonstrated that it can actually be done, and relatively fast if we execute competently. Although with the current crop of folks at the helm in Europe, that last part is admittedly a very, very big “if”…

What passes for elite thinkers in the Western world today try to claim the moral high ground when it comes to the Russia-Ukraine War – but their actions expose a darker reality.
The Atlantic Council published an opinion piece today by their CEO that argues there is a path for Ukraine to achieve victory in its war with Russia, and as is routinely the case among elite Western opinion-leaders, it involves sending more arms to Ukraine – a cool $90 billion more – and plenty of additional bromides about being the bulwark of democracy. Meanwhile, with equal predictability, they demonize the Russian side in totality. This bifurcation makes it easy to make their arguments: Zelensky/Ukraine is all good; Putin/Russia is all evil. End of story.
So we can’t “let” Russia win, and thus no matter what, must continue bankrolling and providing ammunition to Ukraine indefinitely. While this plays well on pages of well-funded think tanks and cited by others of the so-called elite as justification for continuing the war, it plays out catastrophically on the battlefield for the alleged benefactor of all this support: Ukraine.
As I chronicle in today’s #DeepDive show, we have failed diplomatically to end Ukraine’s suffering for the better part of four years now, instead choosing to continue the war, continue the funding – and continue making hundreds of billions of dollars and Euros for the wealthy elite of America and Europe. As I point out below, while they comfort themselves with patriotic bromides, the Ukrainian country, cities, and men are pointlessly sacrificed on their war-supporting alters. It is a disgrace that will stain the West for decades to come.

The information is true and reflects recent revelations from leaked documents published in The Guardian.
According to an exclusive report from October 10, 2025, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Ukraine in September 2023, accompanied by his major donor, billionaire Christopher Harborne, who donated £1 million to a private company he founded after resigning as Prime Minister.
The visit included meetings with senior Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, and meetings with Ukrainian military research and development companies.
The documents do not explain why Johnson brought this particular donor, who has ties to the arms industry, with him, raising questions about the mixing of public service and private interests – especially in the context of Johnson’s long-standing support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
The documents are part of a larger series of leaked files known as the “Boris Files”, obtained by the US-based non-profit organisation Distributed Denial of Secrets (DDoS). In total, they contain around 2GB of data from Johnson’s private office, including emails, invoices, contracts and itineraries, covering the period from his time as prime minister to 2024.
The Guardian identified several instances in which Johnson allegedly used contacts gained in office for personal gain, such as lobbying Saudi officials or meetings with controversial figures in Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
