‘LOOSE CANON’ Netanyahu and Israeli political landscape creates uncertainty for the future of the Jewish State

‘I’m not sure that Netanyahu will listen to anyone maybe, except for Donald Trump. Only the United States can provide enough pressure on Israel to change the Israeli behaviour. But I am sceptical even about the US capacity to have a serious impact on Netanyahu.

Trump might disagree with what Netanyahu is doing in Gaza, but Netanyahu doesn’t stop and he’s not likely to stop in any immediate future.

So I think that Netanyahu acts as a loose cannon. Maybe when they have elections in Israel next year, there’ll be a change of the ruling coalition and maybe we will see new faces in the Israeli leadership.

But unfortunately, right now, when I observe the political tense in Israel, my conclusion is that Netanyahu might face more challenges from the right rather than from the left.

He’s criticised, even by more radical political groups within his own political coalition. And that of course is something that creates uncertainty about the future of the Jewish state at large and about the future of the Israeli foreign policy in particular.’

My mother and I have been discussing displacement. She has a clear intention to leave, but

she asks me: Where can we go? We have no place to turn to in southern Gaza, and we don’t even have tents to shelter in. The prices of tents are extremely high. For now, we will remain here until there is a safe space available for us to move to.

Honestly, we have never experienced this level of psychological exhaustion before. The constant dilemma of whether to stay or leave has drained us completely. We can no longer sleep at night because of the endless thoughts, and every morning our conversations revolve around the same questions: What will we do? Where can we go?

This is one of the hardest situations we have ever been forced into during this war—uncertain of the right decision or the right time. But we always remind ourselves that God is with us through these circumstances.

In 1948, Zionist paramilitaries massacred local residents and launched repeated attacks. They drove out the local population.

This was one example of the horrors of the Nakba, when 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes and 15,000 were murdered.

Today only the ruins remain, but a few of the survivors – and many thousand descendants – live on.
