URGENT: Escalation of settler terror in Umm Al Khair, West Bank

June 29th, Shimon Atia, a known settler, arrived with his flock of sheep and roamed freely through the village, ultimately trespassing into the backyard of a local resident named Salim. Shimon refused to leave, intimidated residents, and created disturbances throughout the day. He then occupied a patch of land next to a resident’s home — land that includes a toilet and a cemetery — and declared it his own. Israeli authorities enforced Shimon’s illegal land grab, stating that the Palestinian house’s backyard is “territory of the State of Israel”.

June 30th, at around 8 p.m., Shimon returned to Umm Al Khair, this time armed with a gun and a large stick. He assaulted activists and harassed the residents. When Israeli police and military forces arrived, instead of protecting the villagers, they allowed Shimon to remain on the land he had seized and forced the residents behind a fence.

Today, July 1st, Shimon came back yet again, destroying the repaired fence and trees. Footage shows that during each intrusion, he has threatened and attempted to assault residents while shouting at them. Each time, Israeli security forces have arrived but have not intervened to stop the settler’s attacks.

This incident comes amid a broader surge in settler violence across Masafer Yatta and other parts of the occupied West Bank, where communities are facing repeated home demolitions, land seizures, and assaults. Local residents and human rights groups warn that these unchecked attacks are part of a systematic effort to forcibly displace Palestinian families from their land.

WHY SO MANY FOREIGN BASES IN AFRICA?

How many African military bases do you know of in the US? What about in the UK, or in France? The number is, of course, zero. Meanwhile, our continent hosts dozens of military bases belonging to other countries. The US has the largest footprint (or rather, boot print) – with locations across Africa from east to west. Note that these are only the known ones: countries like the US have a history of running black sites.

A common justification given for all these military bases is that they are here to help Africa deal with insecurity. But would you take health advice from a coffin maker? The biggest culprit, the US, is a major destabilising force. It spearheaded the overthrow of Libyan pan-African icon Muammar Gaddafi, turning the Sahel into the new global epicentre of terrorism as US-armed rebels trickled south after the job was done. In East Africa, the 2006 invasion of Somalia by Ethiopia (acting as a proxy for Washington) led to the rise of terror group al-Shabaab. Another example: the United Arab Emirates is fanning the flames of the devastating proxy war in Sudan by backing the genocidal RSF paramilitary. The UN says the war has created the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis. So why would Africans trust The Pentagon & Co. to bring about stability? But there is hope. Not so long ago, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger hosted various Western militaries.

But then came the revolutions – and the formation by that trio of counties of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Mali gave French forces the boot in 2022, Burkina Faso and Niger in 2023. The AES is now fighting terrorism as one, and – arguably – is doing a better job than foreign powers in the region ever did.

UN Special Rapporteur @FranceskAlbs’s new report detailing how companies have profited from Israel’s illegal occupation, apartheid and now its ongoing genocide in Gaza must serve as a wake-up call to corporations and states.

@amnesty calls on all States to act urgently on these findings by assessing the links between companies operating in their jurisdiction and Israel’s unlawful conduct. They then must put in place measures that prevent corporations from contributing to or benefitting from the unlawful occupation, apartheid or genocide.

@amnesty is dismayed by the attacks and threats against the UN Special Rapporteur, including the US government’s calls for her dismissal. We recall that Special Rapporteurs are independent experts. This independence must be respected and protected.

Special Rapporteurs are not appointed to please governments or to be popular but to deliver their mandate. Francesca Albanese has delivered an important and much needed report on the role of economic actors in Israel’s unlawful occupation, apartheid and genocide. States must now consider the findings and implement the recommendations. Not attack, threaten, or disrespect the Special Rapporteur.
