At least 8 Palestinians were killed in Gaza City this weekend, including 5 members of the Labad family who died Saturday when their home collapsed in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, according to Al Araby TV. Three others were killed in separate Israeli drone strikes in Al-Tuffah and Al-Shajaiya in the city’s east.

Gaza’s Civil Defense said two people remain missing under the rubble after seven hours of rescue efforts. The house had been damaged in earlier Israeli shelling.

Since the ceasefire took effect, 46 structurally damaged buildings have collapsed across Gaza, as authorities warn that thousands of homes remain unsafe, particularly amid winter rains.

Still, Israel continues to block caravans, tents, and reconstruction materials for more than 1 million displaced Palestinians who urgently need support according to the UN.

The Sanction of Col. Jacques Baud: A Case Against Democracy

“All my bank accounts are frozen, and I’m not allowed to travel within the EU. That means that I’m not allowed to go back to my country… I’m accused of making propaganda for Russia and responsible for implementing strategies or disinformation attributable to Russia. So they don’t even know if the disinformation I’m supposed to implement is for Russia… This is a disaster for democracy, and I think everybody in Europe has understood that with my case. And in fact, my case was mentioned in the German Parliament, in many parliaments, and you had reactions on my case almost in every European country. I think probably the only country that didn’t react to that was mine… I will be allowed to buy food. I will receive an authorization to buy food and to pay my bills, or things like that. But in essence, we are back to the Middle Ages.” — Col. Jacques Baud

Lt. Col. Daniel Davis frames the case as a stark contradiction of Western democratic claims, asking how a man can be financially ruined and silenced “in this democratic West… having freedom of speech and all that,” without warning, trial, or legal recourse. He repeatedly underscores the irony that the EU—“not at war with Russia” and still trading with it—has chosen to freeze assets and restrict movement simply for views it dislikes, calling the action “the exact antithesis of democracy.”

Col. Jacques Baud recounts the timeline with clinical precision. He learned via a news article; formal notification came only with publication. Since then, “all my bank accounts are frozen, and I’m not allowed to travel within the EU.” The accusation is “propaganda for Russia”—specifically for allegedly promoting a conspiracy theory about Ukraine provoking the invasion. Baud flatly rejects this, stating he merely quoted a senior Ukrainian official’s warning.

He underscores his deliberate, intelligence-analyst approach: refusing all Russian media invites, using primary Ukrainian and US sources, and carefully avoiding propagandistic language. Yet, he notes the central paradox: “being as objective as you can be… is still considered as pro-Russian.”

Both stress that the sanction is political, not legal. “There is no judgment. There’s no court,” Baud says. “I have no right to defend myself.” The surreal consequences complete the indictment. He may need to apply for a “humanitarian derogation” just to buy food—“we are back to the Middle Ages,” he remarks. A journalist who lived in East Germany told him his plight was the same, “with one difference… they used to warn people one week in advance. So the European Union is worse than East Germany.”

When my colleagues and I were forced to evacuate our compound in #EastJerusalem in January this year due to the entry into force of Israel’s anti-UNRWA laws, it was with an unwavering commitment to our mandate and to continuing UNRWA’s work in the #WestBank.

Making good on this promise, our staff on the ground have worked tirelessly under increasingly hostile conditions to maintain our critical services for #Palestine Refugees.

In an unprecedent and deeply disturbing move two weeks ago, on Monday 8 December, the UNRWA compound in Sheikh Jarrah was forcibly entered by Israeli forces and officials from the Jerusalem municipality – acting in the official capacity of a UN member state. They broke locks and kicked down doors.

My own office was searched and also the office of the Commissioner-General was broken into. UNRWA property was looted, with Israeli officials removing office furniture, IT equipment, and other UN assets, all in a highly organised, documented manner.

In a deeply symbolic move, the UN flag flying over our office building was removed, thrown into the dirt, and replaced with an Israeli flag.

The compound in Sheikh Jarrah is located in occupied East Jerusalem, over which Israel does not legally have sovereignty. UNRWA has been operating from this location in Sheikh Jarrah since 1952 – 15 years before Israel occupied the West Bank.

As a UN building, UNRWA’s compound should be protected under international law by the same security forces that forcibly entered it.

This Israeli raid on the compound came just days after UNRWA’s mandate was renewed by the @‌UN General Assembly with 151 votes – a clear attack on the authorisation entrusted to UNRWA by the international community. It also follows less than two months after the International Court of Justice affirmed UNRWA’s indispensable role, and Israel’s obligation to facilitate our work.

Meanwhile, a dangerous amendment to the anti-UNRWA laws is steadily advancing in the Israeli Knesset, aiming to cut off water and electricity from UNRWA facilities – disabling humanitarian services – and to allow for the confiscation of the land this historic compound is situated on.

The UN emblem, so blatantly torn down, stands for multilateralism, for international cooperation, and for peace.

An attack on UNRWA is an attack on the UN as a whole, and the member states that created it.

It goes against international law and Israel’s obligations as a UN member state – there is no justification for it. It sets a dangerous precedent for UN operations worldwide.

Dr. Abu Safiya, a senior Palestinian physician and hospital director in Gaza, was taken directly from his workplace. He was wearing his medical gown. A tank stood where an ambulance should have been. Soldiers replaced patients.

The scene was not chaotic; it was deliberate. This was not an arrest carried out quietly under legal pretence. It was a detention operation conducted openly, confidently, and without fear of consequence.
