Breaking | Amnesty International marked 300 days since the abduction of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who was detained by Israeli occupation forces during their raid on the hospital on December 27, 2024.

As of October 25, 2025, it has been 302 days since Dr. Abu Safiya was taken and held under what Israel calls “administrative detention,” without charges or trial, a policy applied to more than 5,500 Palestinian detainees, including doctors, journalists, children, and women. Amnesty International reiterated its call to end these arbitrary detentions and demanded Dr. Abu Safiya’s immediate release, stating: “Around the world, we refuse to look away. We refuse to be silent.”

When this brave Australian doctor said the hospital was a slaughterhouse, she was absolutely right..

Some people wonder how an institution can also provide medical services.

Others think the doctor is exaggerating.

For those who don’t know me, I’m from Gaza. I work at the same hospital as this doctor, Al-Shifa Hospital, and I’ll explain what I saw..

I saw how minor surgeries are performed without anesthesia…anesthesia is only used for major operations…

I saw how the injured were stitched without local anesthesia…

I saw someone who had a splint put on his hand due to a fracture.. But there was no electricity to operate the x-ray, so the doctor wasn’t careful with his treatment, and the bones fused incorrectly.. I saw how that man’s hand was broken without any anesthesia so they could reattach it again..

I will never forget the sight of the corpses tent..

There were more than 200 unidentified bodies in it.. Every person who had a missing person went to search that tent.. The smell was truly unbearable..

I saw how doctors are forced to choose one case to save and leave another. Due to the large number of injured people, hundreds of injured people were arriving at once. Do you know that feeling?

Doctors were dealing with cases that had a chance of survival.. even though those cases were hopeless they were supposed to try, but if they tried the case would die while there was a chance of survival.. The hospital was without electricity. It was running on a small generator that barely lit the hospital..

There were hundreds and thousands of injuries in the hospital, and the hospital beds were not enough for this huge number.. so they were treated on the floor, as shown in the doctor’s video..

It’s hell in every sense of the word.. And a lot and a lot and a lot of pain.. Every shift I had, I cried from the horror of what I saw.. Every shift I had was a challenge..

This is a small part of what my colleagues and I went through and saw in the hospital. I hope I was able to explain a small part of what the doctor meant when she said it was a slaughterhouse.

Thousands of women have lost their husbands and children, and many have experienced miscarriages due to food shortages and lack of medical care. Women and girls bear immense burdens, with one in every seven households headed by a woman, facing daily threats to their lives and the lives of their children.

Despite these harsh conditions, women continue to support their families and communities. However, current aid is insufficient to meet basic needs.

There is an urgent need to provide resources and support that empower women to launch life-sustaining initiatives that preserve their dignity and stabilize their families, such as bakeries, humanitarian kitchens, and childcare services.

We had a sacred custom, to capture moments from time and hide them away in countless albums. Albums that guarded the details of our lives, our laughter, our gatherings, photos stretching back for decades. They were our solid memory, our tangible record against forgetting.

Then the war came and fled our home, leaving behind the photos and memories, hoping they would remain, and we would remember once more. But our house was destroyed. They left us no wall to lean on, no door to close on our sorrows. Everything turned to ruin and rubble.

I returned to search amidst the stones and dust, not for something of value, but for something priceless. I searched for those albums, for the scent of old paper, for the faces we loved, frozen in a moment of happiness. I found no photo, no album, no trace. The rubble had swallowed decades of our lives.

And suddenly, from amidst all this death, from beneath the dust of loss, it appeared. My small photo, fixed atop my kindergarten certificate. 24 years have passed since it was taken, and I have carried it in my heart before carrying it in my hand. It alone survived, to be the last and only witness that we “were” once here.

We used to care for the smallest details of our lives, preserving them for time so that we would always remember. Now, nothing is left of all that time but this innocent gaze, telling me that everything we cherished is lost, and that memory has been erased as if it never existed.
