DaysofPal- Just one day after the European Union announced plans to resume its monitoring mission at the Rafah Crossing on Wednesday, the Israeli occupation authorities declared that the crossing will remain closed, following a recommendation from their security establishment to block aid entry and prevent the reopening of Rafah in line with U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan, until the bodies of Israeli captives held by Hamas are handed over.
This decision comes despite the EU’s announcement on Monday that its mission would return to Rafah to facilitate the entry and exit of civilians and aid under the first phase of Trump’s ceasefire framework.
According to Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan, there has been no official coordination with the Red Cross regarding the transfer of additional Israeli bodies, though Israel confirmed on Monday night that it had received four remains of its soldiers.
In contrast, Israeli forces today handed over 45 bodies of Palestinian martyrs through the International Committee of the Red Cross, which were transferred to Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis for identification before burial.
Israeli authorities are pressuring for the rapid recovery of 24 Israeli captives killed by their own army in Gaza, even as military analysts admit that finding all the bodies could take weeks or months, given the massive destruction caused by Israel’s genocidal campaign. As a result, an international mechanism is being established to coordinate search efforts for the remains.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Tuesday that recovering the bodies of Israeli captives killed by Israel’s military in Gaza will take time, describing it as an “immense challenge” due to the widespread devastation.
“This is even harder than releasing the living,” said Christian Cardon, spokesperson for the Red Cross. “It’s a grave challenge, it may take days, weeks, or they may never be found.”
Under the current agreement, the remains of 15 Palestinian martyrs will be exchanged for each Israeli body recovered from Gaza.
Over the past two years, Israel has withheld hundreds of Palestinian bodies, including those of captives executed under torture in its prisons, concealing their fate and identities.
The deal also provides for the daily entry of 600 humanitarian aid trucks, carrying food, fuel, and cooking gas, in accordance with the ceasefire agreement announced last Thursday by U.S. President Donald Trump, following indirect talks in Sharm el-Sheikh involving Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar, under American supervision.
Backed by the United States, Israel has waged a genocidal war on Gaza since October 8, 2023, killing 67,869 Palestinians and injuring 170,105 others, mostly children and women. The deliberate blockade has also caused a famine that killed 463 Palestinians, including 157 children.

Israeli Airstrikes Pound Southern Lebanon’s Reconstruction Sector
Some 20+ Israeli airstrikes struck multiple sites across southern Lebanon in less than half an hour, destroying a quarry, a concrete plant, and a stone-cutting factory—facilities built after Israel’s 2000 withdrawal and that were now helping rebuild war-damaged border towns. Explosions were heard as far as Saida, and jets were seen flying low over the Zahrani coast.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said at least 6 people were injured—one in Bnaafoul and five in Ansar—as civil-defense crews battled fires triggered by the bombardment. “The strikes lit up the sky and were consecutive … the planes flew so low they looked like they were touching the houses,” a resident of Adloun told L’Orient.
Israel’s military said its warplanes targeted “Hezbollah and the Green Without Borders organization infrastructure,” claiming a quarry used to produce cement for rebuilding “terrorist facilities” was destroyed. Spokesman Avichay Adraee described the sites as attempts by Hezbollah to “rebuild under civilian cover.”

UN experts urge Germany to halt criminalisation and police violence against Palestinian solidarity activism
GENEVA (16 October 2025) – UN experts* today urged Germany to stop criminalising, punishing, and suppressing legitimate Palestinian solidarity activism.
“We are alarmed by the persistent pattern of police violence and apparent suppression of Palestine solidarity activism by Germany,” the experts said.
They urged Germany to uphold its human rights obligations and to respect and facilitate the right to peaceful assembly for everyone without discrimination. “Under the right to peaceful assembly, non-violent protests are protected and must not be punished,” the experts said. “Political protests and those expressing dissent must not be subject to undue restrictions based on content.”
The experts noted that, since October 2023, Germany has escalated and expanded restrictions with regard to Palestinian solidarity activism and protests even though actions have been overall peaceful and used to express legitimate demands, such as calling for halting arms exports to Israel, ending the genocide and the Israeli illegal occupation, ensuring humanitarian aid access to Gaza, the recognition of the State of Palestine, and accountability for those who have committed atrocity crimes.
During the past months, Palestine solidarity protesters in Berlin have been reportedly subjected to police violence, leaving some injured and requiring medical care. Dozens were reportedly arrested, some for simply chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”. This slogan is widely used by the global Palestine solidarity movement yet has been treated by German authorities as expressing support for Hamas, the experts noted. While some courts upheld fines or bans deeming the slogan as “condoning violence”, other courts recognised it as protected under freedom of expression. Moreover, the experts expressed concern that, during protests marking the two-year anniversary of the 7 October Hamas-led attack and the subsequent genocide in Gaza, arbitrary arrests, detentions, and police violence were reported, including officers punching non-violent activists in the face; while the police in Berlin reportedly imposed a last-minute ban on protests without evidence-based justification.
“We have regularly raised with the German Government concerns related to undue restrictions on Palestinian solidarity movements, including through reportedly unjustified bans and defunding of associations; restrictions on peaceful assemblies, events and participants; excessive use of police force and arbitrary detentions, including of minors; expansive criminalisation of human rights defenders and protected expressions connected to defending Palestinian identity and rights; and forced deportations,” they said.
The experts noted that Germany often invokes broad justifications on grounds of security, public safety, prevention of antisemitism, or banning support for terrorist organisations.
They stressed that the use of foreign policy-related justifications and misuse of immigration law to reject citizenship or deport activists are alarming. “These are contrary to international standards and have a deep chilling effect on the protection of democratic freedoms,” they said.
“Germany must support, not suppress, actions aiming to stop atrocity crimes and genocide,” the experts said. “No circumstances can justify unnecessary and excessive police violence or unjust criminalisation for exercising fundamental freedoms.”
The experts have been in contact with the Government of Germany regarding their concerns.
