“Daddy, I’m scared… let’s go to safety.” That’s what my little boy whispered to me after a terrifying night. The bombing was so close, all through the night. My children couldn’t sleep for a single moment. Adam cried endlessly, begging to stay in my arms, as if searching for safety between them.

In the morning, he asked me something that broke me into tears:

“Daddy, I’m scared… let’s go to safety.” But where is this safety my child speaks of? Where can we find it in Gaza?

I decided to head south… Since early morning, I’ve been packing what little belongings we have, hoping to find any place that could shelter us. But the shock was unbearable — the price of a tent is over $2,000, far beyond my reach. Even transportation costs are more than $1,000. I returned home broken, helpless, unable to do anything.

Tonight, I have no choice but to appeal to the hearts of the merciful. I say one last word: Either you save us tonight… or we become just numbers rising to the sky. The matter is now in your hands.

Unidentified drones have been spotted pursuing the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters and flying at medium altitude over a number of ships, Al Jazeera Arabic reported on Tuesday.

The global fleet of boats, which are part of an international initiative aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to people in Gaza, set sail for Gaza on 1 September.

In the depth of the night, beneath the cover of a worn-out cloth tent, my two daughters Misk and Julia lie side by side, trying to find in sleep a refuge from the cruelty of reality. Tiny eyes exhausted by fear, and innocent bodies seeking warmth under a blanket that cannot keep out the cold nor silence the deafening sounds of bombing around us.

Every explosion shakes the ground beneath us, yet they struggle to steal moments of peace in a world where childhood has vanished. Their sleeping faces tell a story of innocence suspended between fear and hope, a story of children who have known nothing but tents, who have never tasted safety, nor experienced the meaning of a home that protects.

Misk, with her constant question: “Will we survive tomorrow?”, and Julia, with her small smile hiding behind tears, are the image of a childhood trapped between death and hunger, searching for life even in a brief dream.

Each night, I watch them and wonder: what sin have these pure hearts committed to sleep to the sound of war instead of the laughter of childhood? What justice is there in children dreaming of safety instead of living it?

And yet, within me remains a spark of hope—that a day will come when they will wake to the sound of birds instead of shells, and sleep in a warm bed beneath a roof that protects them, not under a fragile tent powerless against the wind.

Today, I appeal to every compassionate heart: help us secure the simplest necessities of life for my children—a safe tent or shelter to protect us from the cold and fear, and food to ease their hunger. Every bit of support, no matter how small, could mean a new life for Misk and Julia, and restore to them the childhood that has been stolen away.

Look at the overcrowded tents along the shores of Gaza’s sea… Thousands of families have spread out on the sand, searching for safety, but even this temporary refuge has become too small, too crowded to hold everyone. People here live side by side, with no comfort, no privacy, and no protection from diseases. The sun burns during the day, the cold bites at night, and the humidity suffocates every breath.

And the tragedy is even greater… there are so many families who couldn’t even find a place to set up their tents. Entire households are left without shelter, without a roof to protect them, wandering along the sand, searching for a small space to place what’s left of their lives.

This scene is only a tiny glimpse of the suffering of Gaza’s people. Forced displacement towards the beach, with no plans, no alternatives, and no regard for human dignity or the right to live in peace. How can people survive like this? How can innocent civilians be left to face the unknown, without safety, without protection?

It is a humanitarian catastrophe in every sense of the word, a desperate cry to the world to look, to act, before the sea and the sky become witnesses to what cannot be endured

Britain is not just complicit in Israel’s breaches of humanitarian law in Gaza but a participant that has repeatedly ignored its legal obligation to prevent a genocide, witnesses have told the independent Gaza tribunal.

The two-day tribunal in London, which is independent of government and parliament, is seeking to amass evidence of Britain’s failure to distance itself from what the tribunal organisers regard as Israeli war crimes amounting to genocide.

It is chaired by Jeremy Corbyn, who claimed the 29 witnesses had “paved the way for truth” and promised he would demand a meeting with the foreign secretary to present the report he will now compile with two legal experts.

The second and final day of evidence, given mainly by experts supportive of Palestine, painted a picture of a government that has done the minimum to hold Israel to account and the maximum to shield itself from parliamentary and judicial scrutiny. The concern for government is that the evidence becomes a widely believed charge sheet against ministers as Israel resists all compromise in its fight against Hamas.

Among the allegations made were that:

• RAF pilots flying from the UK Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus systematically shared intelligence in real time with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), but not with the international criminal court.

• No 10 failed to provide the support requested by lawyers acting for James Henderson, the British World Central Kitchen aid worker killed by the IDF on 1 April 2024, leaving them reliant on an IDF internal investigation, with a coroners’ inquiry still as long as two years away.

• Britain provided no support to the chief prosecutor at the international criminal court, Karim Khan, after the US government imposed sanctions that led a British bank to close his account, “so emboldening those who seek to dismantle international accountability”.

• The UK trade department continued to allow the import of products from Israel-occupied territories after the international court of justice in July 2024 ruled in an advisory opinion that the occupation was unlawful.

Forz Khan, a lawyer acting for the family of Henderson, said: “The Henderson family want to know what the full picture is. He went out there in good faith, yet he was for some unknown reason murdered, picked off in a military fashion. An internal IDF investigation found that it was a mistake. Our case is that it was a deliberate murder.”

Khan also claimed that when the Henderson family were finally given a meeting with ministers, their lawyers were prevented from attending.

Henderson was killed when an Israeli airstrike targeted a clearly marked vehicle. The Israeli inquiry led to the dismissal of two officers. An inquiry by the IDF found a drone operator mistakenly targeted the convoy after thinking it had been taken over by Hamas gunmen.

Some of the most damaging evidence was given by Charlotte Andrews-Briscoe, a lawyer acting for the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq in the UK court challenge into the handling of arms exports controls to Israel.
