Severe malnutrition in under-5s has tripled at Gaza City clinic, charity reports

Charity says number of people needing care for malnutrition has quadrupled and blames Israeli ‘policy of starvation’

Malak A Tantesh in Gaza and William Christou in Jerusalem

Fri 25 Jul 2025

Rates of severe malnutrition among children aged under five at Médecins Sans Frontières’ Gaza City clinic have tripled in the last two weeks, the charity has said, as starvation in the Israeli-besieged strip worsens.

The global aid community has sounded the alarm as Gaza descends deeper into mass starvation, with resulting deaths being reported daily as Israel allows only a trickle of aid into the territory.

MSF said a quarter of all young children and pregnant or breastfeeding women it screened at its clinics last week were malnourished, with the number of people needing care for malnutrition at its Gaza City location quadrupling since May.

MSF is one of the largest medical providers in Gaza, with more than 1,000 staff in the strip providing medical services ranging from maternity care to emergency surgery.

The charity blamed what it called an Israeli “policy of starvation” for the hunger crisis, as global condemnation grows over what more than 100 aid groups say is Israel’s blockade of most aid into Gaza.

Israeli authorities’ deliberate use of starvation as a weapon in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels, with patients and healthcare workers themselves now fighting to survive,” MSF said in a statement on Friday.

At least 122 people have died from starvation in Gaza, with nine more dying in the last 24 hours, according to health authorities.

The World Food Programme on Friday said nearly a third of people in Gaza were not eating for days, and that the hunger crisis had reached “new and astonishing levels of desperation”.

Nearly one person in three is not eating for days. Malnutrition is surging, with 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment,” the WFP said in a statement.

Naji al-Qurashali, an obstetrician-gynaecologist in Gaza, said statistics appeared to underestimate the true scale of the problem, estimating that 50% of the hundreds of pregnant women he saw each day were suffering from malnutrition.

The malnutrition situation is unimaginable. Throughout my entire medical career, I never expected, not even in my wildest dreams, that things would reach this level,” said Qurashali.

Miscarriages had increased significantly among the patients he saw as mothers struggled to find food to feed themselves, he said. Those babies that were carried to term were significantly underweight and were increasingly born prematurely or with disfigurements.

Qurashali said he lacked many of the medical supplies necessary to treat the malnourished women. He and other doctors were forced to use unsanitary medical gloves and prescribe expired medication to patients.

As a helpless doctor, it is an incredibly painful feeling,” he said. “Many times, I leave the hospital running, because I can’t bear the fact that I can’t meet even the simplest needs of these women.”

Medical experts have said that society’s most vulnerable, children and pregnant women, are the first to die in mass hunger events.

Israel has denied it is responsible for the hunger crisis in Gaza, with the foreign ministry calling it a “deliberate foreign ploy to defame Israel”, and blamed the UN for failing to distribute aid. The UN said it was operating as well as it could under Israeli restrictions, which prevent the UN-led aid system from using its 400 aid distribution points throughout the strip.

The UN secretary general, António Guterres, accused the international community of sticking its head in the sand as Palestinians starved in Gaza, lambasting what he called a “lack of humanity”.

This is not just a humanitarian crisis. It is a moral crisis that challenges the global conscience. We will continue to speak out at every opportunity,” Guterres said on Friday.

The leaders of the UK, France and Germany said in a joint statement on Friday that the “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza “must end now” and called on the Israeli government to lift restrictions on aid.

We firmly oppose all efforts to impose Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territories,” the leaders said, calling for an immediate ceasefire.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, said late on Thursday that France would recognise a Palestinian state at the UN general assembly in September. The UK prime minister has come under pressure to do the same, with more than 100 MPs signing a letter demanding Keir Starmer follow suit.

Macron had previously urged the UK to recognise a Palestinian state alongside France and is expected to try to enlist other European countries to do the same. Starmer called the humanitarian situation in Gaza “unspeakable and indefensible” in a post on X on Thursday, but said nothing about recognising a Palestinian state.

Macron’s move was dismissed by Donald Trump, who was due to meet Starmer on Friday evening when he arrived in Scotland. The US president said of Macron on Friday: “He’s a very good guy. I like him, but that statement doesn’t carry weight. Here’s the good news: what he says doesn’t matter. It’s not going to change anything.”

The Israeli military announced on Friday that it had agreed to let Jordan and the United Arab Emirates airdrop aid into Gaza. Each flight carrying aid is far more expensive and holds fewer supplies than lorries do. Hamas described it as a political stunt.

The Gaza Strip does not need flying aerobatics, it needs an open humanitarian corridor and a steady daily flow of aid trucks to save what remains of the lives of besieged, starving civilians,” Ismail al-Thawabta, the director of the Hamas-run Gaza government media office, told Reuters.

Amal Masri, a 31-year-old mother in Gaza who is pregnant, said finding food was near impossible. The food she did find was unsuitable for her pregnant state, and if she ate it out of desperation, she vomited.

Most of the time I am completely exhausted, my blood pressure is very low, and I often feel like I’m suffocating, like I’m on the verge of death,” Masri said.

Her husband, like many Palestinians, has been unsuccessful at getting food from the private US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) distribution sites, and arrives home injured and empty-handed. More than 1,000 people have been killed while trying to get food at GHF or aid sites – the GHF denies any responsibility for shootings outside its distribution sites.

As the humanitarian situation declines, ceasefire negotiations appear to have collapsed. On Thursday, Israel and the US recalled their negotiators from Qatar, where talks were being held.

Trump blamed Hamas for the collapse, accusing it of not wanting to make a deal or give up Israeli hostages. The US president said he thought Hamas leaders would be “hunted down”.

Hamas officials denied they were responsible for the end of the round of peace talks, and accused Israel of stalling.

Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, said: “What we have presented – with full awareness and understanding of the complexity of the situation – we believe could lead to a deal if the enemy had the will to reach one.”

A joint statement on Gaza from AFP, AP, BBC News and Reuters

(…)

oooooo

Let’s dissect this terrible New York Times headline and understand it for the propaganda that it is.

1. Firstly, the Times chooses to use the word “Gazans”, rather than Palestinians. We know from leaked internal emails that NY Times senior management forbid reporters from using the word “Palestine” or “Palestinians” when covering the topic? Why? Because using those words legitimizes them as a people with a state. “Gazans”, by contrast, does not. In this light, then, we can understand this choice as a deliberate attempt to erase a people’s identity and statehood.

2. “Are dying of starvation” — this makes it sound, to a casual reader, that this is a natural phenomenon, as if there is a drought or a famine. Nothing could be further from the truth. Palestinians in Gaza are being starved by Israel.

3. No mention of the perpetrator. This is such standard practice nowadays that it is almost a trope to even point it out. But it is important. Not identifying Israel as an active participant in the genocide frames the story differently and disinvites the reader to see Israel as the bad guy.

4. And that is exactly the point. The New York Times is an overtly pro-Israel publication, with senior management explicitly telling staff to report in a pro-Israel manner. Studies have shown that The Times is vastly more likely to report on Israeli deaths than Palestinian ones, and to use emotive language like “slaughter” when doing so (https://theintercept.com/2024/01/09/newspapers-israel-palestine-bias-new-york-times/).

Management have told staff that they cannot use words like “occupation”, “refugee camp”, “genocide”, or even “Palestine” in their reporting. (https://theintercept.com/2024/04/15/nyt-israel-gaza-genocide-palestine-coverage/)

Many top NY Times figures have exceedingly close links to the IDF and to Netanyahu himself (https://newyorkwarcrimes.com/dossier). The New York Times even hired a “former” Israeli spy with zero journalistic experience to write a now discredited propaganda piece about Hamas atrocities (https://mintpressnews.com/revealed-israel-unit-8200-spies-american-media/288457/).

In short, then, The New York Times remains one of the premier pro-Israel propaganda outlets in the world. And headlines like this underscore that fact.

The punitive conditions (for Europe) of the EU-US trade deal are the ultimate example of the fact that the European Union, from making Europe “stronger together”, has delivered a structural subordination to the US unseen in the postwar era. My latest:

ooo

EU trade deal is a capitulation to America

By Thomas Fazi

Yesterday, the European Union and the United States finalised a trade agreement imposing a 15% tariff on most EU exports to America — a deal US President Donald Trump triumphantly hailed as “the biggest one of them all”. While the agreement averted an even harsher 30% tariff threatened by Washington, many in Europe are calling it a resounding defeat — or even an unconditional surrender — for Brussels.

It’s easy to see why. The 15% tariff on EU goods entering the US is significantly higher than the 10% that Brussels had hoped to negotiate. Meanwhile, as Trump himself boasted, the EU has “opened up [its] countries at zero tariff” to American exports. Crucially, EU steel and aluminium will continue to face a crushing 50% tariff when sold into the US market.

This asymmetry places European producers at a severe disadvantage, raising costs for strategic industries such as automotive, pharmaceuticals and advanced manufacturing — sectors that underpin the EU’s $1.97 trillion transatlantic trade relationship. The so-called “rebalancing” measures clearly tilt the playing field in favour of the US, forcing European economies to absorb higher costs simply to preserve access to American markets.

Even worse, the EU has committed to $600 billion in new US investments, as well as $750 billion in long-term energy purchases and increased procurement of American military hardware. This further deepens the continent’s structural dependency on US energy supplies and military resources.

The political reaction in Europe has been scathing, with French Minister Benjamin Haddad labelling the agreement “unbalanced”. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tried to present the deal as a pragmatic compromise to avoid an all-out trade war, but few were convinced. As geopolitical commentator Arnaud Bertrand observed on X: “In exchange for all these concessions and extraction of their wealth the EU gets… nothing. This does not even remotely resemble the type of agreements made by two equal sovereign powers. It rather looks like the type of unequal treaties that colonial powers used to impose in the 19th century — except this time, Europe is on the receiving end.”

A few lessons can be drawn. First, the deal should finally shatter the longstanding myth that the EU strengthens its member states by increasing their negotiating power. For decades, Europeans have been told that only by pooling sovereignty into a supranational bloc could they wield enough collective clout to stand up to global powers. This was always a convenient fiction. In reality, the opposite is true: the EU systematically erodes the ability of individual nations to respond flexibly to domestic and external challenges based on their own economic and political priorities. The bloc’s rigid framework — its multilayered and bureaucratic decision-making structure, chronic lack of democratic accountability, and suffocating regulatory overreach — only compounds these weaknesses..

By locking European nations into a supranational straitjacket, Brussels has deprived them of the sovereign tools — industrial policy, trade flexibility, and energy independence — needed to defend their own interests. What’s more, the EU has always been ideologically and strategically wedded to Atlanticism — and its progressive integration with Nato in recent years has only deepened its subordination to the US. This alignment has become embarrassingly apparent under von der Leyen.

As a result, far from making Europe “stronger together”, the EU has delivered an unprecedented loss of leverage and autonomy. The bloc now resembles the very thing it was supposed to overcome: a collection of vassal states, unable to chart an independent course and increasingly reduced to the role of Washington’s economic protectorate.

Trump is not entirely wrong when he accuses the EU of engaging in unfair trade practices. Over the past two decades, Brussels has embraced a hyper-mercantilist, export-driven growth model which systematically suppresses domestic demand in order to bolster price competitiveness on the global stage while keeping imports low. In other words, it has consistently prioritised trade surpluses over internal economic development.

This model has come at a steep cost. European citizens have paid the price through stagnant wages, precarious employment and chronically underfunded public services. Meanwhile, the EU’s trading partners — most notably the US — have been forced to absorb Europe’s ever-growing export surpluses, feeding an increasingly unbalanced global economic relationship.

A rebalancing was indeed long overdue. But this agreement represents the worst possible kind of rebalancing. Instead of using this moment as an opportunity to rethink its fundamentally flawed economic strategy — by raising European wages, boosting internal demand, and accepting that exports might become less competitive as a result — the EU has doubled down on the very model that hollowed out its own economic resilience. Rather than shifting towards a healthier, more domestically-driven growth path, Brussels has chosen to preserve its export-led paradigm at all costs. That now means exposing Europe’s industrial base to a flood of imports, accelerating deindustrialisation, and deepening its dependence on foreign markets.
