BRICS Summit 2024 started with a Surprising NEWS: A new Global Order?

BRICS Summit 2024 in Kazan Russia Starts tomorrow and a news of new agreement between two BRICS members surprised the world. In this video, we analysed it from historical perspective.

0:03

trade between China and India has a long

0:05

and Rich history spanning back over two

0:08

Millennia the two ancient civilizations

0:10

first engaged through Overland trade

0:12

routes most notably the Silk Road which

0:15

facilitated the exchange of goods

0:17

culture and knowledge between east and

0:19

south Asia as early as the first

0:21

millennium BCE archaeological evidence

0:24

such as Indian beads found in China from

0:26

this period underscores the early

0:29

contact between these civilizations one

0:31

of the most notable developments in this

0:33

trade relationship occurred with the

0:35

spread of Buddhism from India to China

0:38

during the 1st Century CE this religious

0:41

and cultural exchange was facilitated by

0:43

trade routes especially as Buddhist

0:45

monks traveled between the two regions

0:47

along with the transmission of religion

0:49

Goods such as Chinese silk and Indian

0:51

spices gems and textiles moved along the

0:54

Silk Road silk in particular became a

0:57

symbol of Chinese exports highly sought

1:00

after in India and Beyond by the 18th

1:03

and 19th centuries European colonialism

1:06

began reshaping the nature of Sino

1:08

Indian trade the British East India

1:10

Company played a pivotal role in

1:12

mediating trade between the two regions

1:14

particularly through the controversial

1:16

opium trade the British exported opium

1:19

grown in India to China leading to the

1:21

infamous Opium Wars in the mid 19th

1:24

century which severely disrupted China’s

1:26

economy and trade relations World War II

1:29

two significantly impacted trade between

1:32

China and India as both countries became

1:35

embroiled in conflicts that limited

1:36

their ability to engage in international

1:39

Commerce additionally the political

1:41

upheavals in both countries such as the

1:43

Chinese Civil War and India’s

1:45

independence movement led to a temporary

1:47

decline in bilateral

1:50

trade the india-china Border dispute

1:53

rooted in historical claims remains one

1:55

of the most persistent geopolitical

1:57

tensions in Asia the central issue

1:59

revolves around the line of actual

2:01

control or Lac a

2:03

3,488 km undefined boundary that cuts

2:06

across the Himalayan region this

2:09

boundary is primarily contested in two

2:11

major sectors axai chin in the west and

2:13

Aruna Pradesh in the

2:16

East the Border dispute traces back to

2:19

the British colonial era when unclear

2:21

surveys and differing interpretations of

2:23

natural borders complicated territorial

2:25

claims the McMahan line proposed in 1914

2:29

during the Simla convention was

2:31

recognized by India as its eastern

2:33

boundary but China has never accepted

2:35

this

2:36

demarcation on the Western Front axai

2:39

chin a Barren high altitude region

2:42

became the focus of disputes when China

2:44

built a strategic Road through it in the

2:46

1950s linking Tibet to shinjang which

2:49

India objected to the tensions escalated

2:52

into the 1962 Sino Indian War a short

2:55

but intense conflict that resulted in a

2:57

decisive victory for China China

3:00

Consolidated its control over Oxi chin

3:03

while India retained control of the

3:04

Eastern region which China claims as

3:07

part of its Tibet territory this war

3:09

left a long Shadow souring bilateral

3:12

relations for

3:15

decades following the war relations

3:18

remained cold with sporadic skirmishes

3:20

along the Lac however both Nations

3:23

agreed in the 1980s to separate the

3:25

Border issue from broader diplomatic

3:27

relations several rounds of talks and

3:29

confidence building measures including

3:31

protocols on Military disengagement

3:33

helped maintain relative peace however

3:36

the rising economic and military power

3:38

of China in the 2000s began to shift the

3:41

balance as China expanded its

3:43

infrastructure and Military presence

3:45

near the Lac tensions grew in response

3:49

India bolstered its own border defenses

3:51

setting the stage for increased friction

3:53

incidents like the 2017 doam standoff

3:57

underscored the potential for conflict

3:59

even though both sides managed to

4:02

deescalate a significant Turning Point

4:04

occurred in June 2020 when Chinese and

4:07

Indian troops clashed violently in the

4:09

gwan valley resulting in the first

4:11

fatalities at the Border in over four

4:13

decades this Clash caused a fundamental

4:16

shift in the relationship with both

4:18

sides ramping up their military presence

4:20

along the Lac subsequent efforts to

4:23

disengage through diplomatic and

4:25

Military talks have been slow and

4:27

incremental with both sides maintaining

4:29

a heavy heav military presence India and

4:31

China have now as of October 21st agreed

4:34

on a patrol Arrangement along their

4:36

disputed border effectively ending a

4:38

4-year military standoff India’s foreign

4:41

minister announced on Monday this

4:43

development paves the way for improved

4:45

political and economic relations between

4:47

the two major Asian Nations the

4:49

announcement comes just before prime

4:50

minister Narendra modi’s visit to Russia

4:53

for the bricks Summit from October 22nd

4:55

to 24th where he may hold discussions

4:57

with Chinese president Xi Jinping

5:00

according to Indian officials at an NDTV

5:02

media conclave Indian foreign minister

5:05

subramanyam jankar stated that the

5:07

agreement restores the situation to how

5:10

it was in 2020 and marks the completion

5:13

of the disengagement process with China

5:16

he noted that the understanding was

5:18

reached only that day and emphasized

5:21

that disturbing peace and Tranquility

5:23

hinders the progress of the broader

5:25

relationship a senior Indian military

5:28

officer told Reuters that to to prevent

5:30

confrontations both militaries will

5:32

Patrol disputed border areas according

5:34

to a mutually agreed schedule the

5:37

officer added that both Nations will

5:38

monitor the ladak region to ensure

5:40

compliance and prevent any violations

5:43

officials in New Delhi indicated that

5:45

the agreement clears the way for a

5:47

potential bilateral meeting between Modi

5:49

and shei on the sidelines of the bricks

5:51

Summit which would be their first

5:53

encounter since 2020 the military

5:55

officer also mentioned that both sides

5:57

will slightly withdraw their troops from

5:59

current positions to avoid direct

6:01

faceoffs while being allowed to patrol

6:03

these areas according to a developing

6:05

schedule he further added that monthly

6:08

review meetings and consistent

6:09

monitoring of the contested regions by

6:11

both countries would help ensure there

6:13

are no

6:16

violations let’s take a quick pause

6:30

the upcoming 2024 bricks Summit has

6:32

several significant topics on its agenda

6:34

the primary focus will be on

6:36

consolidating the recent expansion of

6:38

bricks which now includes new members

6:40

like Saudi Arabia Egypt the UAE Iran and

6:44

Ethiopia discussions will likely revolve

6:46

around how to integrate these new

6:48

countries and refine brics’s broader

6:50

strategy to enhance Global cooperation

6:53

key issues include promoting the use of

6:55

local currencies for trade among member

6:57

states as an alternative to the US

6:59

dollar

7:00

which is part of a broader goal to

7:01

reduce Reliance on Western Financial

7:03

systems however this initiative is aimed

7:06

at providing flexibility in crossborder

7:09

transactions rather than outright

7:11

dollarization Russia in collaboration

7:14

with the central banks of brics member

7:15

states is actively developing a new

7:17

settlement and payment infrastructure

7:19

designed to enable transactions in

7:21

National currencies including digital

7:24

forms this initiative is part of a

7:26

broader effort by the brics Nations to

7:28

enhance their financial autonomy and

7:30

reduce Reliance on traditional Western

7:32

controlled Financial systems which are

7:34

often vulnerable to sanctions or

7:36

external political

7:39

pressures a key aspect of this effort is

7:41

the proposed creation of a multilateral

7:44

digital settlement and payment platform

7:46

tentatively named brics bridge this

7:49

platform aims to interconnect the

7:50

financial markets of brics members

7:52

enabling more seamless trade in

7:54

financial transactions the system under

7:57

consideration since the 201 23 brick

8:00

Summit in South Africa seeks to provide

8:02

a resilient infrastructure that would be

8:05

immune to external interference

8:07

including sanctions which have

8:08

particularly affected countries like

8:10

Russia the concept of bricks bridge is

8:13

seen as crucial for expanding Financial

8:15

cooperation particularly in the context

8:17

of the ongoing discussions on

8:20

dollarization as brics countries push

8:22

for the use of national currencies in

8:23

trade a digital platform could

8:26

significantly enhance the efficiency and

8:28

security of these transac actions such a

8:30

system could also pave the way for the

8:32

inclusion of digital currencies such as

8:34

Central Bank digital currencies cbdcs

8:37

into regular crossb payments at The

8:40

Summit in Kazan the development of this

8:42

independent multilateral digital

8:44

platform is expected to be a major Focus

8:47

Russian Federation Council speaker

8:49

Valentina matvienko emphasized the

8:51

importance of this issue suggesting that

8:53

it will be a key topic of discussion the

8:56

platform represents a strategic move

8:58

toward establishing greater Financial

9:00

sovereignty among brics nations

9:02

potentially reducing their exposure to

9:04

the geopolitical risks associated with

9:06

the current Global Financial

9:10

infrastructure the bricks countries have

9:12

been working on the development of such

9:13

an alternative System since 20123 and

9:16

its potential implications are vast for

9:19

instance bricks collectively represents

9:21

over 40% of the world’s population and

9:24

contributes approximately 25% of global

9:27

GDP making it a significant Block in

9:30

global economic Affairs the successful

9:33

implementation of a brics exclusive

9:35

Financial platform could further enhance

9:37

the group’s economic influence providing

9:39

a new model for other emerging economies

9:42

seeking alternatives to the traditional

9:43

Western Le Financial

9:46

order in addition to economic

9:48

cooperation the summit will also

9:50

emphasize reforming Global governance

9:52

institutions like the UN and Breton

9:54

Woods institutions IMF and World Bank

9:57

the block is expected to renew it calls

9:59

for restructuring these bodies to

10:01

reflect the shifting balance of power

10:04

particularly to give more voice to

10:05

emerging economies other significant

10:08

discussions will include addressing

10:09

Global challenges such as climate change

10:12

food security and energy cooperation the

10:15

establishment of a bricks payment system

10:17

enhancing supply chain resilience and

10:19

fostering scientific collaboration will

10:22

also be on the agenda the summit will

10:24

additionally explore ways to bolster

10:26

multilateralism in an increasingly frag

10:29

segmented Global political

10:33

landscape that’s all for this video

we now go with our special Envoy in

kasan junus for more information on the

0:03

bricks plus 2024

0:06

Summit hello good afternoon good night

0:09

good evening from the city of Kazan In

0:11

the Russian Federation a city that is a

0:15

symbol for the meeting of east and west

0:18

as it uh has a population both Christian

0:22

represented by its churches and Muslim

0:25

represented by its mosques but today and

0:29

the days ahead

0:30

Kazan will be a symbol of the global

0:33

South because here will take place the

0:36

bricks Summit of this year starting

0:39

tomorrow 22nd of October and Lasting

0:43

24th of October an important Gathering

0:47

of the countries of the global South 33

0:50

countries will be represented of this in

0:52

this Summit 22 of them will be

0:55

represented at the level of head of

0:58

state or head of government Prime

1:00

minister or presidential level we know

1:03

that there is a huge interest uh towards

1:06

the alliance that there are around 30

1:10

members 30 countries who think who have

1:14

expressed the will to join the alliance

1:16

and this will be the number one agenda

1:19

of this Summit actually how to relate to

1:22

these uh new members maybe establishing

1:26

a new partner State system these are

1:29

proposed proposals that will be

1:30

discussed on this Summit also as well as

1:34

concrete and Urgent uh uh requires or

1:39

demands of certain countries that want

1:41

to join the uh bricks Alliance remember

1:44

among these countries are heavyweights

1:47

of the global South such as Venezuela

1:49

and Cuba from Latin America from Africa

1:52

we have Nigeria and Kenya very populous

1:55

countries from Eurasia let’s say we have

1:58

turkey that expressed to join uh the

2:01

alliance from Asia we have Malaysia and

2:04

Indonesia that also stated that they

2:06

were interested in joining the alliance

2:08

so this will be topic one topic two in

2:12

regards to the alliance will be the

2:13

matter how will it proceed how will it

2:16

progress in terms of institutional

2:19

development right now bricks is merely

2:22

described as a forum as a gathering of

2:24

heads of state and of ministers at lower

2:27

level but there are proposals to advance

2:31

the organization the alliance more

2:33

organizationally to introduce rules of

2:35

decision making to introduce a new

2:38

formats so that the uh maybe a new

2:42

Secretariat uh also for the alliance so

2:44

that it becomes a more stable more

2:47

institutional framework deepening that

2:50

integration is the main topic in terms

2:55

of the economic sphere where we can

2:58

highlight also the other uh very famous

3:02

uh key word here

3:05

dollarization or maybe better said

3:08

creating an alternative to the Western

3:11

dominated Financial system what’s here

3:13

on the agenda the Russian Federation

3:16

which has the chairmanship of the uh

3:18

Alliance this year has presented several

3:21

proposals among them is creating a

3:24

network between National Commercial

3:27

Banks via crypto

3:30

currencies and blockchains so that these

3:33

can exchange with each other trade and

3:36

payments and establish a payment system

3:38

that so that they don’t need to uh get

3:42

to refer to the Western dominated

3:43

Financial system and look for US dollars

3:46

to finance foreign trade among

3:49

themselves but it doesn’t stop there

3:51

there are more ideas in regards to

3:54

integrating the countries with each

3:57

other there is the idea of establishing

3:59

an bricks Reserve System so that

4:03

countries that fall into a kind of

4:05

economic crisis can recur to this

4:08

Reserve System which would essentially

4:11

be an alternative to the uh Infamous

4:14

international monetary fund moreover

4:18

there is the proposal to create trading

4:21

platforms international trading

4:23

platforms for bricks countries and

4:26

others that might like to join them to

4:28

trade major Commodities such as uh grain

4:32

or also energy oil products uh mining

4:37

products these are traditionally traded

4:40

uh and sold and bought and their prices

4:43

dominated in Western financial markets

4:46

so this proposal would establish an

4:48

alternative to them not uh dominated by

4:52

Western trading exchange platforms but

4:55

by the bricks platform there are of

4:58

course also ideas on the humanitarian

5:01

and cultural level there is the idea of

5:03

deepening the interp parliamentarian

5:06

cooperation there are have been

5:08

discussions about deepening scientific

5:10

cooperation between bricks countries

5:12

energy cooperation there have been

5:15

actually this is worth mentioning a

5:18

number of summits before this

5:20

presidential Summit where Ministers of

5:23

bricks countries have gathered on the

5:25

level of economy foreign ministers

5:27

agriculture health and energy and so on

5:31

to look for uh areas and possibilities

5:33

of cooperation so these will also be

5:36

discussed here on the bricks Forum that

5:39

lasts until October 24 but the alliance

5:44

does not close its eyes to the current

5:46

Global conflicts which dominate the

5:48

agenda such as the war in Ukraine or the

5:52

Israeli aggression against Palestine so

5:56

these will also be dealt with in

5:58

sessions we heard that there will be a

6:00

session for Palestine separately and

6:03

it’s worth here remembering that the

6:06

Palestinian president Mahmud abas uh has

6:09

arrived in to Russia he has met

6:12

yesterday uh with Vladimir Putin the

6:15

Russian president who has invited mahud

6:18

apas to join the bricks Summit as well

6:21

so bricks will not only uh deal with its

6:24

own institutional and organizational

6:26

agenda deepening institutional uh or

6:30

integration deepening economic

6:32

integration creating an alternative to

6:35

the Western dominated Financial system

6:37

advancing dollarization it will also

6:40

seek to uh uh develop common positions

6:44

on current global conflict issues these

6:48

will be the days where the global South

6:50

will meet here in the Russian city of

6:53

Kazan and as a Russian politician has

6:56

stated in my eyes correctly the future

6:59

of humanity will not be dominated by the

7:02

US elections but by the outcomes of this

7:06

Summit

Cuba Requests Russia for BRICS “Partner Status” Amid Rising US Tensions | Firstpost America

Cuba has officially requested to join BRICS as a “partner country” in a letter addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin. BRICS, composed of emerging economies like Russia, China, India, and Brazil, has expanded in 2024, welcoming Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. While Cuba’s 2023 bid for full membership was unsuccessful, the partner status offers a way to collaborate without formal membership. This move aligns with Cuba’s growing cooperation with Moscow, driven by their mutual rivalry with the US. As BRICS gains prominence in the Global South, Cuba seeks to strengthen its international position through this alliance.

Transkripzioa:

0:00

and now moving to the Caribbean where in

0:01

a bold move to further solidify its

0:04

Global standing Cuba has requested to

0:07

join the bricks Nations as a partner

0:09

country Cuba’s foreign minister revealed

0:11

in an announcement that the Caribbean

0:13

nation has submitted an official letter

0:15

to Russia’s Vladimir Putin Who currently

0:18

holds the brics presidency brics known

0:20

for its Collective of emerging economies

0:23

including Brazil Russia India China and

0:26

South Africa have positioned itself as a

0:29

counter way to the Western dominated

0:31

World Order and this year the

0:33

organization welcomed new members

0:35

including Egypt Ethiopia Iran and the

0:38

United Arab Emirates marking its first

0:40

expansion since South Africa’s entry in

0:45

2010 we cannot ignore the increasing

0:47

interest in bricks from many countries

0:50

today more than 30 countries

0:52

specifically 34 have expressed a desire

0:54

to join our Union in one form or another

0:57

therefore an active discussion has been

0:59

initiated ated among all bricks

1:01

participants regarding the modalities

1:03

for a new category of partner

1:08

States now Cuba’s latest request for a

1:11

partner country status comes after its

1:13

un unsuccessful bid for full membership

1:16

back in 2023 unlike full membership this

1:19

status allows countries to collaborate

1:21

closely with bricks without becoming a

1:23

formal member it’s an alternative path

1:26

for countries in the global South a

1:28

group that increasingly sees bricks as

1:30

an attractive block to align

1:35

with I am convinced that the bricks

1:38

countries are capable of jointly making

1:40

a serious contribution to ensuring

1:41

Global Security and countering such

1:43

threats as terrorism the spread of

1:45

extremist activity transnational crime

1:48

and the use of information and

1:50

communication Technologies for criminal

1:54

purposes the bricks Spirit of mutual

1:57

respect and understanding

Can BRICS offer a counterbalance to the existing world order? | Inside Story

The 16th BRICS summit will have five new members, doubling the group’s strength to 10.

Leaders from several other countries are also attending.

Some of them, like Turkey and Malaysia, have already applied to join the growing alliance.

The event allows President Vladimir to signal to the West that he has not been isolated because of the war in Ukraine.

It’s also an occasion for other member states to amplify their voices and policies.

So, what’s behind the rapid expansion of this bloc?

Presenter: Hashem Ahelbarra

Guests:

Andrei Fedorov – Former Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia.

Hassan Ahmadian – Professor of Middle East Studies, University of Tehran.

Mark Seddon, Lead, Centre for UN Studies, University of Buckingham.

an alliance representing more than 1/4

0:04

of the world’s economy the bricks block

0:06

has now doubled its number and is set to

0:09

expand further so what’s drawing these

0:11

countries together and can bricks offer

0:14

a counterbalance to the existing world

hello welcome to the program I’m Hashim

0:37

Mahala Russia is set to host its biggest

0:40

foreign policy event ever leaders

0:42

representing more than 40% of the

0:45

world’s population are assembling in the

0:47

southwestern city of Kazan the 16th

0:49

bricks Summit will have five new members

0:53

doubling the group strength to 10

0:55

leaders from several other countries are

0:57

also attending some of them like turkey

0:59

and Malaysia have already applied to

1:02

join the growing Alliance the event

1:04

gives President Vladimir Putin an

1:06

opportunity to signal to the West that

1:08

he has not been isolated because of the

1:10

war in Ukraine it’s also an occasion for

1:13

other member states to amplify their

1:15

voices and policies so what’s behind the

1:18

rapid expansion of this block and can it

1:20

become a challenge to the existing

1:22

Global Order we’ll get to our guests in

1:25

a moment but first this report from um

1:27

Kum Sharif

1:31

the Russian city of Kazan is preparing

1:33

to host the 16th annual bricks Summit

1:36

it’s the Block’s first meeting with five

1:38

new members as it doubles its membership

1:41

to 10 in less than two decades of its

1:44

existence many say its expansion shows

1:47

its growing Global importance bricks is

1:50

the is the voice of the global South

1:53

Global South in these multilateral

1:55

platforms um where the West dominate

1:58

really bricks can take us out of that

2:02

bricks was set up in 2006 with a desire

2:05

to be a geopolitical counterweight to

2:07

the West Brazil Russia China and India

2:11

were the founding members since then

2:14

it’s expanded to include South Africa in

2:16

2010 and Egypt Iran Ethiopia Saudi

2:20

Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were

2:23

invited to join the block last year

2:26

while Riyad is yet to formally confirm

2:28

several other countries have applied for

2:31

membership the beauty of bricks is that

2:35

it doesn’t put you put too many

2:38

obligations on you right there are not

2:41

that many strings attached really for

2:42

being part of the bricks and at the same

2:45

time there might be interesting

2:46

opportunities coming your way including

2:49

just having more face down with all of

2:51

these

2:52

leaders the meeting comes at a time when

2:55

Russia is stepping up its attacks in

2:56

Ukraine and while President Vladimir

2:59

Putin faces an arrest warrant for war

3:01

crimes issued by the international

3:04

criminal court last year bricks when

3:07

mosca wants to present the summit as

3:09

evidence that Western efforts to isolate

3:12

it have failed ahead of the summit Putin

3:16

said bricks and not the West will drive

3:18

global economic

3:21

growth the total GDP of the bricks

3:24

Association is more than 60 trillion and

3:26

the total share of the global gross

3:28

product confident exceeds that of the

3:30

So-Cal G7 countries and it continues to

3:34

grow Russia also wants other countries

3:37

to work with it to overall the Global

3:40

Financial system and end the dominance

3:43

of the US

3:44

dollar bricks is perceived as an

3:46

alternative to the dollar system it

3:48

offers some alternative ways of carrying

3:50

out economic and financial transactions

3:53

Russia proposes to use some kind of new

3:55

currency which could allow National

3:57

currencies to be converted into to a new

4:00

unit of payment it will reportedly be

4:02

digital

4:04

money Putin has also invited Palestinian

4:07

president Mahmud Abbas to the summit

4:09

where Israel’s war on Gaza is expected

4:12

to be discussed the Russian leader has

4:15

reaffirmed his government support for

4:17

the two-state

4:19

solution ulum Sharif Al jazer for Inside

4:23

Story

4:31

let’s bring in our guest in Moscow Andre

4:34

federov former deputy foreign minister

4:37

of Russia in tahan Hassan ahmedan

4:40

professor at the University of tahan who

4:42

specializes in Iranian foreign policy in

4:46

Herford in the UK Mark sidden director

4:49

of the center for United Nations studies

4:51

at the University of Buckingham and was

4:53

a veteran un correspondent welcome to

4:55

the program Andre is it the sense in

4:58

Russia that bricks has all it takes to

5:02

become a key geopolitical

5:07

player I would like to say that in

5:09

Moscow by Russian President Putin this

5:13

Summit of bricks is considering as a

5:15

turning point towards creation of

5:18

multipolar

5:20

world of course uh the idea to make

5:23

bricks as a serious political player is

5:26

important but at the same time it’s a

5:29

contrad

5:30

with its original goal to make it

5:33

effective economic mechanism and there

5:35

is a situation when some of the

5:38

countries like India are against soal

5:43

mechanical enlargement of bricks uh

5:46

being afraid that uh political side of

5:50

bricks will be prevailing so that’s why

5:54

it’s very important to find that this uh

5:57

Summit coming Summit balance between

5:59

Poli interests and economic

6:02

realities Hassan when you listen to

6:05

Iranian officials over the last few

6:08

years they’ve been always saying that we

6:10

need something that could serve as a

6:11

counterweight to the dominance of the

6:14

western uh key players and the Americans

6:17

could this moment be the moment that the

6:19

Iranians have been waiting for for many

6:22

years I think that’s exactly what the

6:25

Iranians are speaking of looking at

6:28

bricks as a organization outside the US

6:32

sphere of influence and its domination

6:34

and that gives it strategic weight in

6:38

Iran’s thinking uh it gives Iran

6:41

opportunities the potential that it

6:43

carries economically politically and uh

6:47

uh financially gives Iran opportunities

6:50

to break out of the bux that the United

6:52

States has been trying with its Western

6:55

allies to box Iran in uh uh so the the

6:59

reality that the organization is out of

7:03

the uh domination of the United States

7:07

it’s uh beyond the US so-called us Le

7:11

World Order uh is of strategic

7:14

importance to Teran and the Iranians

7:16

have been vocal about it on an official

7:18

level they have been trying to seize

7:22

this opportunity and the different

7:25

layers that it provides Iran with be

7:27

economic Financial and uh politically uh

7:31

as a way of channeling their uh policies

7:35

uh and in with regards to uh the bricks

7:38

States but also with regards to other

7:41

issues of uh importance to Iran and its

7:43

foreign policy VI the Middle East or

7:46

other regions uh they have been also

7:48

using the podium and political capacity

7:51

that it provides to their priorities as

7:55

well Mark you youve spent many years

7:58

covering the UN now you people in this

8:00

part of the world in particular about

8:02

the US they will tell you the their bias

8:04

is more pronounced than ever you would

8:05

ask them about the UN they will tell you

8:07

one of the most inefficient

8:08

organizations in the world could this

8:11

perception serve as a a trigger for many

8:14

countries to say you know what in bricks

8:16

we could have a genuine alternative to a

8:19

failing International World

8:22

Order well yes I mean I I obviously I

8:24

covered the UN as a journalist but I

8:26

also worked for Secretary General

8:28

banking Moon so I’ve been for enough

8:30

really to see things on on both sides

8:32

and I think it’s not too difficult to

8:34

see right now that the paralysis in the

8:37

UN Security Council principally over

8:40

Israel right now and uh the the the

8:43

ceasefire motions that have kept been

8:46

vetoed repeatedly by uh the the United

8:49

States and of course the also the Russia

8:52

Ukraine war all of these issues have

8:55

paralyzed the UN so it’s not necessarily

8:57

the un’s fault uh it’s the it’s the

8:59

fault of the member states that saying I

9:02

mean I think that the many countries in

9:05

the west don’t quite appreciate how they

9:07

are currently viewed in the global South

9:11

uh and that this paralysis at the

9:13

UN also feeds through to this perception

9:17

that really um Western countries are

9:19

being incredibly hypocritical on the one

9:21

hand calling for Russia to end its war

9:24

in Ukraine but the on the other hand to

9:26

continue supplying Israel with all the

9:28

weapons it may wish for what is clearly

9:31

a genocide in the Palestinian territory

9:33

so I mean there I looked at the West the

9:36

British press this morning there’s very

9:38

little mention of bricks but that does

9:40

show you something of the uh the way in

9:43

which Western media tends to be very

9:45

inward looking um but to my mind it

9:48

needs to wake up because there is a

9:50

reaction against this idea of a unipolar

9:52

world uh and the global South uh is fed

9:56

up of being lectured to um and it wants

10:00

to have its own organizations and good

10:02

luck to it Andre the many people all

10:06

over the world are frustrated with the

10:09

world order but yet they are to see

10:13

bricks achieve what they’re hoping to

10:15

see happen in the near future could you

10:17

give me an idea about what could be the

10:20

first issue that bricks should tackle

10:23

and succeed in bringing about a tangible

10:26

result for people to start finally say

10:29

We Trust

10:31

bricks uh first of all bricks should

10:34

solve uh serious economic problems in

10:38

this modern world it’s a problems of

10:41

equal trade issue of sanctions and many

10:44

other things if bricks will be capable

10:47

to do something in economic life for

10:51

example in the future to create not

10:54

maybe own currency but own economic uh

10:58

Financial system Sy which will be stable

11:01

uh for from outside world interference

11:05

it could uh lead also to Growing

11:09

political influence of bricks so

11:13

economic issues should be on the front

11:16

page of bricks in the coming future

11:20

without it nothing will be

11:23

done Hassan for the Iranians who face

11:26

huge geopolitical challenges

11:29

uh these days with the Americans with

11:32

the Israelis their allies in the region

11:34

have been suffering major setbacks could

11:37

bricks serve as a key Ally that could

11:40

stand with Iran if it faces more and

11:43

more challenges particularly against the

11:45

backdrop of the Israeli

11:49

response the uh Western dominated

11:52

organizations that as as previous

11:55

speakers have pointed out have been very

11:57

hypocritical when it comes to issues in

12:00

the region including when it comes to

12:03

Iran and they they deal with other

12:06

issues that are more linked to their

12:08

security differently such as the

12:10

Ukrainian issue so for the Iranians

12:13

having been uh at the receiving end of

12:17

uh us sanctions unilateral sanctions as

12:21

opposed to a uh International uh

12:24

sanctions that existed before the

12:26

nuclear deal uh Iran is better up with

12:29

this uh us-led so-called World Order and

12:33

uh it’s it’s seeking any opportunity and

12:36

obviously the bricks provides a big

12:39

opportunity for Iran to deal with issues

12:42

that the United States and the West

12:44

Collective West has try have tried to

12:47

push Iran out of for the Iranians it’s

12:50

it’s important to uh look at the uh uh

12:54

the potentialities that this

12:56

organizations uh is this organization

12:58

bring about uh also it’s important uh to

13:02

see the opportunities that are provided

13:05

by it economically and financially uh

13:08

taking sanctions into account also it’s

13:11

important to look at it from a security

13:14

perspective knowing that the United

13:16

States has been supporting uh a

13:19

full-fledged War by the Israelis on Gaza

13:23

and Lebanon and potentially attacks on

13:26

Iran the Iranians also look at

13:29

organizations such as the bricks to

13:32

balance off that unilaterally the

13:34

unilaterality unilaterality that the

13:37

United States is basically uh infusing

13:40

the world system Mark isn’t it a little

13:44

bit naive to think that bricks could

13:47

become a genuine voice of the voiceless

13:50

when you have two key members of this

13:52

Alliance the Russians or the Chinese

13:54

obviously seeing this as a tool to

13:56

expand their geopolitical Leverage

13:59

well that may be but I but I also

14:01

noticed that bricks is attracting lots

14:03

of uh new member countries lots of

14:06

countries want to join it I think there

14:08

does seem to be uh a desire also to look

14:11

beyond the kind of uh free market hyper

14:15

liberalism of the of the of the American

14:17

and the British the anglo-american

14:19

capitalistic model if you like I mean

14:22

it’s just not working um so there’s that

14:25

uh there’s the economic alternative

14:27

that’s coming and especially from the

14:29

global South for the from the emerging

14:31

Powers Brazil South Africa and others

14:33

but also I think it you know you’ve got

14:35

to also look at what’s happening in the

14:37

in the what people Loosely call the West

14:40

I mean it’s quite possible we may have a

14:42

trump presidency in a month’s time which

14:45

will of course alarm an awful lot of the

14:47

European governments um I don’t think

14:50

that many of the European governments I

14:52

mean almost going back slightly to what

14:54

I was saying before but can quite

14:56

appreciate how isolated they have become

14:59

come made themselves become because of

15:02

their stance principally over what is

15:04

happening in Gaza and also now in

15:07

Lebanon um and so this this constant

15:11

support for whatever American foreign

15:14

and defense policy May dictate is not

15:16

helping them at all and so there is this

15:19

reaction I think against the unipolar

15:21

world very much Andre you spoke about

15:25

the the economic Factor as a as a

15:28

defining issue for Brick do you think

15:30

that the proposal by the Russians to

15:32

start with a grain trading exchange as

15:35

the first step that if successful it

15:38

could convince people to move forward

15:41

towards putting together more financial

15:44

mechanisms that could serve as

15:46

alternative to the similar organizations

15:49

such as the uh the international

15:52

monetary

15:53

fund yes it’s one of the goals and

15:56

Russia is supporting this idea to have

15:59

within Brick’s own stable Financial

16:02

system which cannot be uh disturbed by

16:06

any sanctions but by any foreign

16:10

interference

16:11

and which can uh really uh develop first

16:15

of all trade with the use of local

16:17

currencies of national currencies

16:19

without using of US dollar uh it’s long

16:23

process don’t expect that it will happen

16:26

overnight uh but this process uh

16:29

is on the way Hassan when it comes to

16:33

the Middle East in particular members

16:36

are not really see eye to eye when it

16:38

comes to how to move forward could

16:40

bricks today become a tool to enforce

16:44

for example ceasefire in the region

16:47

could influence geopolitical decisions

16:49

could put an end to the instability or

16:51

is it a long way to go before we get to

16:53

that

16:54

point I think it’s a long way uh

16:57

basically the bricks is not a monolith

17:00

obviously there are countries with

17:02

closed eyes to the West parties to the

17:04

bricks but there are those Rising powers

17:07

and there are those who are sanctioned

17:09

there are these this group basically is

17:13

uh uh the the the the party that is

17:17

pushing for a parallel uh mechanism to

17:20

deal with crisis that includes Russia

17:23

Iran and to a large extent China uh

17:26

others don’t want maybe to risk their

17:28

relations in you know getting so close

17:32

to the uh uh you know the idea of a

17:36

parallel order but these countries have

17:38

a common view on how uh things should

17:42

change in not only the Middle East but

17:45

around the world in the Middle East the

17:47

uh uh you know the so-called rules based

17:49

system did not work if

17:52

anything the main pillars of it the

17:57

United States in the West the West that

18:00

established it have helped and aided

18:02

Israel in its uh in its atrocities uh in

18:06

Gaza in Lebanon and elsewhere in the

18:08

region and uh no matter what they did

18:10

what the Israelis did they they kept

18:13

receiving what they needed to do what

18:14

they were doing and still they are doing

18:17

so so that that is is something that is

18:21

uh uh not working basically these

18:23

countries are thinking about something

18:25

parallel that can change the equation

18:28

change many of the parameters that have

18:30

blocked the effectiveness of the

18:32

International System and I think that’s

18:34

a huge goal that cannot happen very

18:37

easily it’s not a shortterm goal there

18:40

are huge challenges there is the uh the

18:43

the the competition between the

18:46

collective West and the bricks as well

18:48

that will we will see more unfolding in

18:51

in the future so there are lots of

18:53

challenges but steps have been taken and

18:56

I think it’s moving

19:00

Mark yes you talk to people and they

19:02

will tell you that the un’s veto power

19:06

is not fairly utilized it’s there just

19:09

to advance the agenda of the powerful

19:11

countries that the security Council has

19:13

never been genuine about the need to

19:16

change things on the ground but yet you

19:19

get a sense that these are mechanisms

19:21

that can

19:24

operate when it comes to Bricks you

19:26

don’t really get a sense of clarity

19:27

about the tools they have to have to

19:31

implement new realities on the ground

19:34

that if they decide tomorrow let’s solve

19:35

this particular problem how can we do

19:38

it well I I can I can see that amongst

19:42

many member many bricks member states

19:44

there’s also a commonality of view about

19:46

what needs to happen with the United

19:48

Nations it’s not power of the veto per

19:51

se it’s how it’s being abused and I have

19:54

to say that over the past two to three

19:56

years um Russia has used the veto a

19:59

great deal America has used The veto a

20:01

great deal America has been backed up by

20:04

my country Britain um I think if the if

20:07

bricks countries can come together and

20:10

push for the desperately needed un

20:13

reform then the bricks are certainly on

20:15

to something um because not only are

20:18

many bricks member states talking about

20:20

a different world economic order but

20:23

once they start talking about a

20:24

different political and security order

20:27

we’re on to something in many many ways

20:29

and I think that un reform is key the

20:32

fact for instance that there’s no

20:35

African member state that is a me

20:38

Permanent member of the security Council

20:40

it’s the same for Latin America we we

20:42

know how it looks and what has got to

20:44

change the UN is fixed as it was in

20:48

1945 with the defeat of Nazi Germany

20:51

well it’s time for change and I think

20:54

that we’re increasingly seeing much

20:56

stronger and and actually empowered

20:59

voices and most certainly what we’re

21:01

seeing in the Middle East more than

21:03

anything is empowering people and by the

21:06

way I think when it comes to the general

21:08

public in especially in Europe they take

21:12

a very different view over many of these

21:14

issues than their governments and so

21:16

this idea that just because the Western

21:18

press is not interested in reporting on

21:20

bricks that somehow people in my country

21:23

are not happy to see members of the

21:26

global South and other countries coming

21:28

together and and actually challenging

21:30

some of these Western nostrums I think I

21:33

think a lot of people do support them

21:35

Andre this is not the first time that

21:37

someone came out and said we need to

21:40

change reality on the ground the

21:42

non-alliance movement in the 60s and the

21:45

70s appealed to many people because it

21:47

was widely perceived to be as a

21:49

challenge to the prevailing world order

21:52

but it failed because some of his ideas

21:55

were so farfetched how can you maintain

21:58

bricks attractive when

22:01

ultimately you don’t have a bank you

22:03

don’t have a currency you don’t have a

22:06

common fund you don’t have a sense of

22:09

unity that could you could sell to the

22:13

people uh first of all I would like to

22:15

say that bricks will never be

22:18

replacement for United Nations MH and I

22:22

fully agree that bricks can influence on

22:25

the possible reform within the United

22:28

United Nations especially

22:31

concerning security uh

22:34

Council but as I said for bricks it’s

22:36

very important to create serious Network

22:39

real Network which includes Financial

22:42

mechanism communication system system of

22:46

consultations and many many things

22:48

bricks should not be organization of

22:52

summits uh bricks should be organization

22:55

of concrete projects which is still uh

22:58

not the case bricks needs a number of

23:02

serious

23:03

Global projects especially economic

23:06

project to uh identify itself as

23:10

effective organization but not only as a

23:13

as I

23:14

said uh organization of

23:18

summits Hassan H how do the Iranians see

23:21

the future of bricks when it expands is

23:25

it going to be the platform that they

23:27

have been looking forward to seeing put

23:30

into place that could respond to some of

23:32

their grievances concerns about their

23:35

position and their place in the on the

23:37

global

23:39

Arena that’s definitely is the case for

23:42

the Iranians as I said uh you know the

23:45

unilateral sanctions the unilateral

23:48

actions uh on the part of the United

23:50

States and his allies in the region

23:52

these Iran violating the nuclear deal

23:56

that was part of the international law

23:58

because it was ratified by the United

24:00

Nations uh Security Council all of that

24:04

told the Iranians that

24:06

uh I mean that order has failed Iran

24:10

Iranians have been trying to uh uh you

24:13

know further their agenda and their

24:15

policy within that framework to this day

24:18

but still they are seeing opportunities

24:20

coming up as a result of uh you know the

24:24

other countries uh facing the same

24:27

challenges that Iran has space Visa the

24:29

United States and the West Russia now is

24:32

under immense sanctions Iran is under

24:35

sanctions China has seen its share and I

24:38

think moving forward we’ll see more uh

24:41

this creates the club of the sanction

24:44

that is a huge club and uh economics

24:49

geopolitics uh and uh you know other

24:53

aspects can be dealt with collectively

24:56

within this framework but you know uh uh

25:00

not to exaggerate it is important

25:02

because uh even Regional organizations

25:05

such as the uh European Union it took it

25:09

took four decades for it to have a

25:12

common cency and lots of issues uh are

25:16

still to be resolved within parties that

25:20

are member to the bricks to move to a

25:23

more coherent Vision as to where things

25:25

should move but all in all I think there

25:28

is this that common rather broad you

25:32

know Common vision

25:35

of reforming the un uh tackling issues

25:40

beyond the west and I have one last

25:43

question if you don’t

25:44

mind okay Mark uh bricks resonates among

25:49

left-leaning governments particularly in

25:51

Africa and Latin America when

25:55

governments there turn right or

25:57

conservatives I don’t think they were

25:59

willing to do anything that could be

26:01

seen as an affront or a challenge to the

26:03

Americans so do you think that this

26:04

could undermine the chances for bricks

26:07

to stand solid in the

26:10

future well I don’t know I I I suspect

26:13

you know you talk about the European

26:14

Union um as our as our our colleague in

26:17

Teran was just doing there I mean

26:19

essentially you’ve got lots of different

26:22

political Persuasions running European

26:24

countries and most countries apart from

26:26

of course mine which left uh seem to be

26:29

quite happy to be within the EU large

26:31

organizations have got to be constructed

26:34

really to to be big enough for all of

26:36

their members and to take account of the

26:38

different types of government they may

26:40

have but there’s a commonality of

26:41

Interest we’ve talked about some of this

26:44

when it comes to the United Nations um

26:47

the rule of international law all of

26:49

these things that actually came out of

26:51

the end of the second world war that our

26:54

grandparents fought so hard to establish

26:57

um are now being sort of ripped ripped

27:01

up in front of us and so I think there

27:03

there are many countries around the

27:05

world looking for a new kind of

27:08

stability in terms of peace and security

27:10

they don’t see necessarily America as an

27:13

honest broker in the mid East anymore uh

27:16

and they also look at the economic model

27:19

that we’ve had for the past 40 50 years

27:22

and also since the collapse of um of the

27:25

Soviet Union and which which generated

27:27

an even faster rush to an extreme free

27:31

market kind of model that does not

27:33

really suit uh most countries and so

27:36

there’s a lot

27:37

of opportunities for change I

27:40

think Mark sidan Hassan ahmedan Andre

GEHIGARRIA

We Basques do need a real Basque independent State in the Western Pyrenees, just a democratic lay or secular state, with all the formal chracteristics of any independent State: Central Bank, Treasury, proper currency, out of the European Distopia and faraway from NAT0, maybe being a BRICS partner…
