This is one of the most terrifying revelations of Gaza: Israel has for the first time ever built an AI, with the help of Google , to automatize its killing process, resulting in the carnage we all know of. Read the now famous @972mag article about it:

We’re not paying enough attention to the immensely grave consequences of this. And when you think them through, it’s crystal clear that this use of AI needs to be immediately banned, much like we’re banning chemical or biological weapons.

Why are chemical or biological weapons banned? For their indiscriminate nature, because they do not distinguish between combatants and non-combatants, and because of the scale of their damage, they lead to mass casualties with minimal effort.

Israel has demonstrated, vividly, that the exact same problems exist with the use of AI in war.

Their AI – named Lavender – was tasked with identifying targets for Israel to kill. It did so, like AI does, with “black box” thinking resulting in humans have little other choice than to trust the AI with the targets it outputted. As per the 972 investigation, the only check humans made was to see if the target was male or female: if female, they assumed the AI got it wrong, males were automatically assumed to be correctly targeted and were therefore killed as a result. That is textbook indiscriminate killing because we have humans basically trusting an unaccountable and eminently fallible machine to decide whom to murder.

The ruthless efficiency of AI also led to mass casualties with minimal effort. Whereas normally one has to spend countless hours doing investigative work in order to identify a single target, an AI can find thousands of targets effortlessly. And it did: a reminder that by mid-November 2023, one month into its assault, Israel had already killed 15,000 people in Gaza.

We can even imagine such AIs being deployed on grander scales or even more dystopian ways. For instance imagine this deployed in a great power war involving nuclear-armed nations, with all the potential for catastrophic mistakes and escalation that this entails. One key reason for this is because if you know your adversary uses AI, you’re forced to use AI yourself in order not to be at a disadvantage and before we know it we have two industrial killing machines competing with each others, with body count on each side escalating exponentially at an insane rate and leaders with their fingers on the nuclear launch button asking themselves whether we haven’t reached a stage where this has now become existential…

Or similar technology could be deployed on domestic populations under the guise of maintaining law and order. The same black box algorithms that do not adequately explain their decision-making processes could be used to justify wrongful arrests or excessive force. This would pave the way for a new form of systemic oppression, where machine bias enforces and amplifies human prejudice under the cloak of technological impartiality. For instance you could have a pattern of behavior that leads the AI to believe you’re a terrorist about to commit an attack because, say, you bought the wrong things on Amazon and you happen to be Muslim, and before you know it you have a trigger-happy SWAT team raiding your house.

All in all, I can only see this resulting in further dehumanizing warfare or law enforcement, leading us towards a future where life-and-death decisions are beyond the control or even understanding of human operators. At some point we ought to ask ourselves: at what point does the pursuit of security become a surrender of our very humanity?

1 Iran re-established its red lines. Israel cannot continue to just assassinate and conduct airstrikes.

2 Israeli air defense even with US, UK, and Jordan support can be hit anywhere even when they know it’s coming.

3 North Korea and Russia got valuable data. Russia looked at this data with a smile. The impressive thing is that these shots flew over two countries and the whole thing was telegraphed for two weeks. Yet still they were slapped. Israel exposed its entire air defense grid shooting down cheap drones. And their airbase was still hit by missiles. Watch as they continue to escalate with Hezbollah.

4 It took over a Billion dollars, in less than one day, to defend against mostly cheap drones and long distance cruise missiles. That is not sustainable.
