It is only after the deficit begins to expand again that the economy recovers. The historical correlation is 100%….
Governments are monopoly issuers of fiat currency. …
Contrary to general perception, fiat money is driven by the fact that taxpayers need the government’s money to pay their taxes. … so it can obtain the real goods and services it desires via the spending of its currency.
…. the government can borrow its currency only after it has provided it to the private sector. Government borrowing, therefore, functions to support interest rates, not as a funding operation.
…. Treasury spending is a reserve add. Selling securities, by the Fed or Treasury, is simply a reserve drain, a monetary operation. This underlies the empirical evidence that nations can run any debt ratios they want, in their own fiat currencies, and still “fund the debt.”
Consider inflation. …. By changing what it pays, the government redefines its currency. Currently, the government fights inflation by maintaining an economy weak enough for the private sector to be under pressure to sell goods and services. This selling pressure keeps prices from rising.
How large a deficit is prudent? …., the government could offer a job to anyone who wanted one, at some minimum rate of pay deemed appropriate, and let the deficit float. This would end unemployment and unemployment compensation, eliminate the need for minimum wage laws, and promote price stability. .
The Fed sets short term rates. Congress has ultimate control over the Fed. ….These rates are not determined by market forces. Treasury securities are not necessary unless the government wishes to support higher long term rates. …
The Federal debt is all the money spent but not taxed. —
The current budget debate is based on erroneous assumptions. Washington does not understand fiat money. Until it does, efforts to reduce the deficit will continue, and the economy will continue to underperform.

The Ukrainian army is not winning. In fact, it is losing badly. Ukraine is being destroyed, its population has been slaughtered. In lopsided battles with a technologically superior enemy, millions were scattered to the rest of the globe as refugees, Ukraine is running out of soldiers. As that happens the question will inevitably arise, who is going to replace them? If the Ukrainians can’t beat Putin, who will? The answer course would be us, American troops will fight the Russian army in eastern Europe, that is most likely, and the assumption is that we will win. But will we win?

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, assured this Tuesday that the South American giant “is back” in Africa to relaunch trade relations —which contracted by a third in the last decade— under the South-South cooperation scheme, which includes State alliances with the private sector and the financing of strategic projects through the New Development Bank (Bank of the BRICS).
“There is a lot of room to grow. In addition to a past that unites us, we also share a common vision of the future. Brazil is back to the continent from which it should never have been separated. Africa brings together vast opportunities and enormous growth potential “, he stated during his participation in the BRICS Business Forum.
He also pointed out that “ambitious projects” are underway in Africa for the construction of free trade zones, which represent a good opportunity to place Brazilian commodities and products such as food, beverages, iron and steel manufactures, hydrocarbons and various minerals, in a market which covers 54 countries, 1,300 million people, a GDP of more than 3 trillion dollars and with the youngest population in the entire world.
The economic and productive integration between Africa and Brazil is subject to the expansion of air and sea connections between the two regions.
“It is inexplicable that we still do not have direct flights between São Paulo and Johannesburg, Cairo and Dakar, essential for the increase in the flow of people, trade and tourism,” Lula claimed, indicating that the BRICS Business Council proposed the signing of a multilateral air services agreement between the members of the bloc, with the participation of the national authorities in the matter.

Algeria begins mediation trip on Niger crisis in three ECOWAS countries
Algeria on Wednesday sent its Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, on a tour to Nigeria, Benin and Ghana to help find a way out of the Niger crisis, Algerian Foreign Ministry announced.
Minister Ahmed Attaf will hold “consultations on the crisis in Niger and ways of dealing with it” with his counterparts in these ECOWAS countries, the ministry said.
The aim is to contribute “to a political solution that will spare this country and the entire region the repercussions of a possible escalation of the situation”.
President Tebboune said on August 6 that he “categorically rejects any external military intervention” in Niger, which he described as “a direct threat to Algeria”.

“The European Central Bank and the Bank of England have been increasing interest rates as a ‘chasing shadows’ exercise – meaning that the drivers of the inflation they claim to be fighting are not sensitive to the interest rate changes. But the interest rate hikes are causing damage to the real economy by increasing borrowing costs. Meanwhile, fiscal policy is in retreat because the government thinks it has to set policy to complement the central bank hikes – meaning two sources of austerity. And for those commentators who pine for re-entry to the EU – they should look East and see what a mess the European economy is in!”
