Please join us for this 14th installment of #MMTMondays, where, in an interview from early this summer, Warren Mosler, “The Father of MMT”, will give his history and the history of Modern Monetary Theory–his first realizations that mainstream economics has it all wrong…
MMT uses logic to explain the function, uses and methods of money and monetary operations in a monetarily sovereign country. It’s spend first, tax later–which goes against all mainstream thought. Warren explains the difference between monetarily sovereign nations and those which are not, such as countries in the Eurozone, where their debts are no longer denominated in their own currencies–putting them in peril of default, as we see with Greece, for example. So, countries in the Eurozone need to obtain the Euro in order to spend–like U.S. states, municipalities and households, whereas a country that issues its own currency does not. It can issue currency as necessary for spending.
Logic: How can taxes come before spending if you need to obtain $$ in order to pay those taxes? Where does the money come from? You don’t create it yourself–the government does. Spends it into the economy, where it can be obtained through labor etc. Therefore, the spending comes first–THEN the taxes. Can’t be disproved. Done.
Warren explains the function of bonds and interest rates and their effects–or non-effects–on the economy–things of which we may not have a clear understanding–until now.
An understanding of this is absolutely vital to the comprehension of how federal financing really works–which is the opposite of what we’ve always been told. The EU example makes it easier to see. We need to know this in order to be able to petition Congress to spend for public purpose–Medicare For All, Green New Deal etc., instead of special interest spending as occurs now. Mosler explains this is we will “pay for” public purpose programs. All of them. Mosler discusses involuntary unemployment and the Federal Job Guarantee, which is an integral part of MMT ideology.
When you begin to understand how the economy actually works–and can see through the lies we’ve been told for so long–your whole outlook will change. MMT. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

#MMTMondays – Microeconomics with Warren Mosler, Bill Mitchell & Martin Watts Part 1
This is one of the more complete, simple but comprehensive talks directly from the founders of MMT. It begins with MMT fundamentals. It then goes on to talk about the importance of spreading this paradigm shift through grassroots movement to reverse an expanding campaign towards austerity.
1st Section: Warren Mosler
Moslers starts with a quote from his white paper on the basics of Modern Monetary Theory, opening up discussion of the most fundamental ideas surrounding MMT.
2nd Section: Bill Mitchell
Here, you will encounter a very funny side of Bill Mitchell. He starts by sharing when the idea of MMT developed then moves on to the need for social media to begin the spread of a paradigm change through grassroots efforts. Understanding social psychology plays an important role in countering the widespread false notion on macroeconomic cycles and the need for a move towards deregulation of the private market.
